Commentary

And when it was more astonishing that this one who was created from dust, a male, created from him a female, and made them similar to the sky and the earth, water, and vegetation, and purity, and virtue, He said: ﴿And among His signs﴾ meaning in that; and since the creation of the female from the male is specific, it was only once like the creation from dust, He expressed it in the past tense and said: ﴿That He created for you﴾ meaning for your sake so that your kind may continue through procreation. And in the precedence of the preposition, there is an indication of the prohibition of marrying outside one's kind. And the expression by 'the self' is clearer in its being from the body of the man in His saying: ﴿From among yourselves﴾ meaning your kind after its creation from the essence of your father Adam, peace be upon him. ﴿Spouses﴾ females, they are a pair for you. ﴿That you may find tranquility﴾ inclining ﴿toward her﴾ with desire and affection, from their saying: he inclined toward him - if he leaned and settled and felt secure with him, and He did not make her from another kind so that you do not feel repelled by her.

And when the purpose of tranquility cannot be achieved except by the continuity of affection, He said: ﴿And He made﴾ meaning He established by virtue of creation on this attribute ﴿between you affection﴾ meaning a meaning among the meanings that necessitates that neither of the spouses wishes for anything to reach his partner that he dislikes, along with what is innate in man of love for ease. And this is its meaning because the root of "wadda" is equal and inverted, revolving around expansiveness and being free from turmoil and disturbance, with the emphasis on the 'waw', which is the wilderness, and love and affection. [It is said in the dictionary: love]. And Abu Abdullah the weaver said, and Imam Abdul Haqq quoted him in his writings: hope, you say: I wish that was the case, and that is for the expansiveness of the paths of hopes and the branching of the valleys of love. [And in the dictionary]: Waddan: a village near Al-Abwa and a long mountain near Fayd. And affection: the book - for the expansiveness of the speech in it. And Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Harali said in the explanation of the beautiful names: affection is freedom from the desire for what is disliked. So when the desire for good and preference for it occurs, it becomes love. Whoever does not wish for anything else has indeed loved, and whoever wishes for good has indeed loved. And affection is the first step in getting rid of the disease of the effects of this world due to what it generates for its seekers from the crowding around it from malice and enmity. And that is a manifestation of what is prepared for him from the purity of love. So whoever loves should not sever ties, and whoever loves should connect and prefer. And the 'Wadud' is the one who is free from all avenues of evil, both outwardly and inwardly.

And when this beautiful meaning cannot be completed except by the intention of good, He said: ﴿And mercy﴾ meaning [a meaning] that carries each one to strive for the other in bringing about good and repelling harm. However, since the intention of good may sometimes involve the granting of something that is disliked, He combined the two attributes, and both are from Allah, while aversion - which is hatred - is from the devil.

And when that was of such greatness that it is beyond description, He indicated it by His saying, affirming their treatment of Him by turning away from what leads to the treatment of one who claims that he was made as a mere waste without wisdom. He presented the neighbor as an indication that its significance in greatness is such that every sign fades away before it, and likewise others that were in this manner.

﴿And We do not show them any sign except that it is greater than its sister﴾ [Az-Zukhruf: 48] ﴿Indeed, in that﴾ meaning what has preceded regarding the creation of pairs in the mentioned state and what follows it of benefits ﴿are signs﴾ meaning clear indications of the power of its doer and His wisdom.

And when this meaning [along with its being] subtle [is understood through contemplation], He said: ﴿for a people﴾ meaning men or in their ruling, for them is strength and diligence and energy in performing what leads them to ﴿reflect﴾ meaning they utilize their minds on the established laws and strive in that.
