Commentary

And when He completed - glorified and exalted is He; and His status is mighty - the proofs; and He established the evidences in reason and hearing; and there remained for the obstinate no doubt; and they did not hasten to submit; rather, they increased in tyranny; and they almost caused strife and conflict among the people of faith; He turned away - glorified and exalted is He - from their address; signaling a severe anger; and the fourth of vengeance; so He said - glorified and exalted is He - addressing His Messenger; who would be the one to kill them: 'Say'; and He established a tool indicating their distance from the sacred presence; so He said: 'O people of the Book'; meaning: from the two factions; 'Why do you disbelieve'; meaning: you commit disbelief; 'in the signs of Allah'; meaning: they are - due to His encompassing all perfection - the clear signs; transmitted and rational; indicating that you are upon falsehood; for it has become clear that you are not upon the religion of Ibrahim - peace and blessings be upon him.

And when their disbelief was evident, He mentioned His testimony (exalted is He); so He said, warning: 'And Allah'; meaning: 'while Allah - who encompasses all things in power and knowledge; there is no deity except Him; and you have associated partners with Him -; 'is a witness over'; all; 'that you do'; meaning: for He knows (p-11) - glorified is He - the secret and what is more hidden; even if you distort and conceal.
