Commentary

And when He made them - glorified and exalted is He - adhere to the evidence that indicated abrogation, that they were not on the religion of Ibrahim - blessings and peace be upon him -; and He made it obligatory upon them to follow it; after clarifying that it is what Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him - and his followers are upon; He informed about the house to which it is permissible to direct oneself in prayer; they criticized him for the people of Islam that he had magnified the greatest of the rituals of Ibrahim - blessings and peace be upon him -; which they disbelieved by abandoning it; and for this reason, He emphasized it; so He said - glorified and exalted is He -: "Indeed, the first house"; meaning: of the houses that gather for worship; "was established for mankind"; meaning: in general; it is obligatory upon them to intend it and perform Hajj to it as He commanded them through the tongue of Musa - blessings and peace be upon him -; and to face it in prayer as revealed to Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him - in that; and perhaps the construction of "was established"; for the one acted upon; indicates that its establishment was before Ibrahim - blessings and peace be upon him -; "for the one in Bakkah"; meaning: the town that breaks the necks of tyrants; and people crowd in it with a crowding that cannot be found in any other place; nor is there anything close to it; so this prophet whom I have shown you must break the necks of all who oppose him; and people must crowd to enter his religion with a crowding that has not been known before; if you miss that, you will have failed in both abodes to the utmost degree of failure; and your humiliation will persist; and your degradation will continue; while it is "blessed"; meaning: of great stability; abundant in goodness in religion and this world; "and guidance for the worlds"; meaning: from the Children of Israel; and those before them; and those after them; so He criticized them - glorified and exalted is He - in this verse for their action of abrogation which they denied against their Lord; and that is their abrogation of what He legislated from evidence from their own selves; distorting it; as an example of what He previously informed about their lying; and this is a well-known matter recorded against them for their opposition; and it establishes for the believers the agreement; for indeed, the Hajj to the Sacred House; and its magnification; is among the greatest of what Ibrahim - blessings and peace be upon him - legislated as is clarified in the histories and others; and they are aware of that; and their prophets - blessings and peace be upon them - and their ancestors performed Hajj; Ibrahim; and Ismail; and Ishaq; and Yaqub; and the tribes; and others from the prophets - blessings and peace be upon them - and their followers; as has been narrated from various sources about the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - until it is reported in some sources that he was with Musa - blessings and peace be upon him - in his Hajj with seventy thousand from the Children of Israel; and it is usually impossible for that to be hidden from them; and it is clear that they have abandoned this great Sharia entirely; and fundamentally; so how can they claim that they are upon the religion of Ibrahim - blessings and peace be upon him - while they have detached themselves from most of its laws!
