Commentary
And when their lying became clear; and their deception was exposed - because when he proved against them with their book; and they did not bring it forth; it became evident like the sun; there is no doubt in it; nor ambiguity; and that did not increase them except in persistence in lying - Allah, glorified and exalted is He, commanded His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, by saying: ﴿Say﴾; meaning: to the people of the book; those who denied abrogation; so I established the proof against them from their book; ﴿Allah has spoken the truth﴾; meaning: the Greatest King; who has all perfection in everything He has informed; and informs about the religion of Ibrahim; and others from his descendants; your ancestors; and it became clear that he is not upon your religion; nor is anyone from before Musa - peace be upon him -; because if you were truthful, you would have brought the Torah; negating thereby that their delay in bringing it forth is due to an excuse they claim other than that; and when the truth of Him (exalted is He) became clear in everything He said; it became obligatory to follow Him in all that He commands; and the greatest of it is the religion of Ibrahim; for it is the one that encompasses all virtues.
And when that was established by this decisive proof; it was necessary to cut off that he was neither a Jew; nor a Christian; nor a polytheist; and they acknowledged that his religion is the truth; and that they are his followers; thus it resulted in the obligation to follow him in what Allah - glorified and exalted is He - informed; and his truth became clear like the sun; not in what they fabricated of lies; so He - glorified and exalted is He - said: ﴿So follow the religion of Ibrahim﴾; and it is Islam; meaning: submission to the proof; and this is the meaning of His saying: ﴿Inclining to truth﴾; meaning: following the proof when it is established; not adhering to what is customary; and when he, blessings and peace be upon him, was created upon Islam; there was nothing in his nature that was crooked; so he had no religion other than Islam; he negated being; and said: ﴿And he was not of the polytheists﴾; meaning: with Uzair; nor anyone else from the great ones; like the scholars whom you imitate; while you know that they call to the opposite of what He - glorified and exalted is He - called to.
