Commentary
And when he informed of that, he clarified that it was the habit of the people of perfection; in a way that confirms what has passed of the news about the great audacity of the people of the Book in lying about a sensory matter. So He said (glorified and exalted is He): "All food was lawful for the Children of Israel"; meaning: all types of fats absolutely; and others; "except what Israel prohibited"; as a justification; and voluntarily; "upon himself"; and he specified it by mentioning it to draw his children to what would elevate them after attracting them to what harms them; and does not benefit them. And when they were, due to the lies they immersed themselves in, they might say: "Indeed, he only prohibited that following the ruling of the Torah"; He said: "before"; and he established the connection to indicate that his prohibition was at some point in that time; not encompassing it; and he expressed it in the present tense because it is more indicative of renewal. So he said: "that the Torah be revealed"; and he had left the meat of camels; and their milk; and it was the most beloved of foods to him; for the sake of Allah; and in preference for His servants - as has been previously mentioned in "Al-Baqarah"; at the point: "So when there came to them what they recognized, they disbelieved in it" [Al-Baqarah: 89].
And when this verse was an obligation upon the Jews to believe in the abrogation which they criticized in this religion; regarding the matter of the Qiblah; and they denied it; to become an excuse for them in their failure to follow the unlettered Prophet whom they found written with them; they would say: "The fats have not ceased; and what was mentioned with them was prohibited for those before us; just as it was prohibited for us"; so he commanded that they be answered by saying: "Say"; meaning: to the Jews; "Bring the Torah and recite it"; meaning: to guide you; "if you are truthful"; in what you have claimed; but they did not bring it; so their lies became evident; and they were exposed in a disgrace that has no equal in this world.
