Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, commanded the manifestation of faith in this saying, and that was the submission which is Islam, He said - warning against apostasy from it, in connection with ﴿We have believed﴾ [Al-Imran: 84] and making evident what is due to Him to be implicit were it not for the intention of alerting to that, indicating by the form of the causative verb the contradiction of the original nature -: ﴿And whoever seeks﴾ that is, desires ﴿other than﴾ the religion of ﴿Islam﴾ which is what He mentioned of submission to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, which includes the known laws whose foundation is faith after truly being adorned with it by manifesting adherence to the messengers or metaphorically by being upon the original nature as indicated by the seeking - as has been mentioned, and He repeated Islam in this context frequently because it is in the realm of the covenant taken by following the confirming messenger, urging complete submission to him ﴿as a religion﴾. And He brought the conjunction 'fa' to indicate that what follows is a consequence of what preceded and is connected to it. So He said: ﴿Then it will not be accepted from him﴾ that is, in this world, and the arrangement of this upon the cause indicates that the removal of the cause is hoped for, as it occurred in the apostasy during the caliphate of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, for most of the apostates returned to Islam and their Islam was good. And His saying: ﴿And he will be among the losers in the Hereafter﴾ means: and it will not be accepted from them in the Hereafter, with the addition of the explicit mention of loss - which is deprivation of reward - contradicting their intentions. The primary aim of this is the people of the Book along with the generality of others for their acknowledgment of this noble prophet and their expectation of him, knowing certainly of his truthfulness due to what is in their books of the glad tidings of him.
