Commentary
And when souls are inclined to treachery and are evasive at the times of trust, he elaborated in the warning and said: ﴿Indeed, those who buy﴾ meaning they enter into taking for the sake of compensation ﴿the covenant of Allah﴾ meaning that which they pledged to Him regarding the faith in the Messenger, who made a covenant with them to believe in him and to mention his attributes to the people. And He, glorified and exalted is He, is higher and more honored than everything, for He encompasses everything in power and knowledge. ﴿And their oaths﴾ meaning those which they made by committing to follow the truth upon the tongues of the messengers with what the intellect indicates. ﴿For a small price﴾ in this world. ﴿Those﴾ meaning they are far removed in rank for their baseness. ﴿Will have no share﴾ meaning no portion ﴿for them in the Hereafter﴾ meaning for selling themselves for the portion of this world. ﴿And Allah will not speak to them﴾ meaning the Greatest King, in disdain for them and in anger towards them for what they have violated of His sanctity.
And when this increased beyond the verse of Al-Baqarah regarding the covenant and the oath, and it was customary for the one who swears and the one who makes a covenant to look at the one who did that for his sake, he increased his saying: ﴿And He will not look at them﴾ meaning rather He considers them the most insignificant of things for what they have turned away from. And when the multitude of the gathering has a great entrance into the difficulty of disgrace, he said: ﴿On the Day of Resurrection﴾ the one who is exposed in his gathering will not succeed. ﴿And He will not purify them﴾ because they did not purify His name. ﴿And for them﴾ meaning along with that ﴿is a painful punishment﴾ by which they will know what they were ignorant of regarding His greatness.
