So when it became established that the entire matter was for him, he mentioned evidence of that among them by saying that he favored a group of them and elevated them, and he rejected a group of them and brought them low. The Book did not turn them - while they recited it - to the truth. He said, adding to what has passed of their disgraceful acts, confirming their concealment of the truth while they knew that it was the truth, that betrayal is their habit in worldly matters and religious meanings, warning that although they share with people in their division into trustworthy and treacherous, they differ from them in that their treacherous ones practice their treachery as a part of their religion and attribute it - escaping from the bond of modesty - to Allah. Praising the trustworthy among them: "And among the People of the Book" meaning those described, "who if you entrust him with a qintar" meaning of the gold mentioned in the following group, "he will return it to you, not being treacherous in it." So do not treat everyone the same in treachery. "And among them is one who if you entrust him with a dinar" meaning one, "he will not return it to you" at a time of times, due to baseness and treachery, "except when" meaning at the time when "you remain standing over him" frequently demanding it from him, as indicated by the tool of superiority. Then he began the reason for the treachery by saying: "That" meaning the matter far from perfection, "is because they said" falsely about their law, "There is no blame upon us concerning the unlettered" meaning one who does not have a Book, so there is no blame upon him in their religion, "a way."
And when lying is from the greatness of disgrace to the extent that it is thought because of it that no one with intellect would dare to do it, how about against Allah, glorified and exalted is He, He said: "And they know" meaning they are knowledgeable, so they know that it is a lie.
