Commentary
And when he mentioned their wearing, he indicated it by his saying, as a continuation of "And a group of them wished" [Aal 'Imran: 69], clarifying another type of misguidance: "And a group of the People of the Book said" meaning from the Jews of Medina, "Believe" meaning show faith, "in that which has been revealed to those who believe" following them. "At the beginning of the day" is called a face because it is the first that faces you from it and it is what appears. Therefore, they expressed it by the first that is suitable for encompassing half, because their intention is to confuse with an outward appearance that has no inner reality, and a word that has no truth to it, in a very small part. "And disbelieve in its end" meaning so that they may think that there is no purpose for you except the truth, and that nothing has turned you away from their religion after you followed it except the appearance of its falsehood. "So that they may return" meaning so that their state is like that of one whose return is hoped from his religion.
