And when the intention of some of them by their claim was that Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, was upon their religion, it was only to mislead the people of Islam. He followed that by expressing their intent with His saying, the Most High - in response to one who might have said: What was the intention of the people of the two Scriptures by their claims in it, while they know that this is contrary to clear reason? ﴿A group desired﴾ meaning it is of their nature to circle around you like a devoted lover, with cunning and deceit ﴿from the people of the Scripture﴾ out of envy for you ﴿if they could mislead you﴾ by returning to their religion, which they know has been abrogated ﴿and they﴾ meaning while they are in a state that they do not ﴿mislead﴾ by that wishing or misleading if it were to occur ﴿except themselves﴾ because each of their wishing and misleading is a misguidance for them, while they are unable to mislead whom Allah has guided. So whoever follows them in their misguidance, then Allah has misled him ﴿and they do not perceive﴾ meaning they do not have any kind of awareness at any time. Their plotting does not go beyond them, for they have combined between misguidance and ignorance, either truly out of their hatred or because when they acted contrary to what they know, their knowledge was counted as ignorance, and they were considered as beasts.
