Commentary
And when the People of the Book knew what the Arabs were created with in terms of love for their father Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, and that Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, brought his religion as previously mentioned in His saying, glorified and exalted is He:
﴿Rather, the religion of Ibrahim, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 135], a group from their relatives gathered in the presence of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. Each one of them misled the other and each one of them claimed a purpose to attract the Muslims to their misguidance by their schemes and their attempts to follow Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, by claiming that he, blessings and peace be upon him, was upon their religion. However, there was no mention of that in their Book, even though reason rejects it with the slightest consideration. This is because the religion of each of them was established by their Book, and their Book was revealed to their Prophet, and their Prophet was after Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, by many long ages. The Jews are attributed to Yahuda, son of Yaqub, blessings be upon him, for taking the birthright from his brother Binyamin for a matter mentioned in their Book. The Christians are attributed to the Nazareth, the birthplace of Isa, blessings and peace be upon him, in the mountain of Galilee. It is inconceivable that the predecessor of a religion could have occurred only after it and on a later attribution than it. And his religion, blessings and peace be upon him, was only Islam, which is the pure and easy Hanifiyyah. So He, glorified and exalted is He, said, rebuking them: ﴿O People of the Book﴾, as if to explain the reason for their rebuke, for the error of the scholar is more disgraceful. ﴿Why do you argue about Ibrahim?﴾ Each of your groups claims him, while the fact is that: “Neither the Torah nor the Gospel were revealed” to establish each of them for the origin of a renewed religion among you. ﴿Except﴾ and since the revelation of the Book of each of them does not encompass the time following it, the conjunction was introduced, and it was said: ﴿After him﴾. The greatest thing that each group among them holds onto is the Sabbath and Sunday, and what they claim in them is not in the Sharia of Ibrahim, blessings be upon him. They cannot deny that, nor can such a claim come in asserting that he is a Muslim, for Islam, which is submission to the evidence, is an ancient meaning that has existed since Allah created reason. The evidence is that no one can claim that anything occurred except after Ibrahim, blessings be upon him, as was said in the two mentioned religions.
And when the rational evidence was clear in that, He concluded the verse with His saying, denying them: ﴿Do you not understand?﴾ That is, suppose you have dressed up and claimed that this is in your Book falsely and slanderously, and you thought that this would be hidden from one who has no knowledge of your Book. How then did you overlook the rational proof!
