Commentary
And when he began the story with the truth in his saying: ﴿He has sent down to you the Book in truth﴾ [Aal 'Imran: 3], he concluded it with that in a more emphatic and greater manner, saying: ﴿The truth﴾, meaning the complete in steadfastness, is ﴿from your Lord﴾, meaning the One who is gracious to you by not leaving any opponent against you with a claim. And when the belief in the truth regarding the matter of Jesus, blessings and peace be upon him, was caused by what has passed in transmission and reason, he said: ﴿So do not be among the doubters﴾, indicating by the form of causation that no one doubts it after this except one who has deeply thought about the doubts he raises and the illusions he engages in and seeks. And how good is what is in the Book of the Prophets (p-429) of the Israelites, which is in the hands of the two groups, the Jews and then the Christians, who transmit it while believing in what is in it. And it clarifies the contradiction of their belief regarding Jesus, blessings and peace be upon him, and the agreement of our belief in him. However, they do not reflect. This is because he said in the prophecy of Isaiah, blessings be upon him: 'Listen to me, O Jacob My servant, and you, O Israel, whom I have chosen! I am the One who created you in the womb and aided you.' Then he said: 'Thus says the Lord: I am the One who formed you in the womb and saved you and aided you. I am the One who created all, and I am the One who stretched the heaven alone, and I am the One who established the earth. I am the One who nullifies the signs of the diviners and turns all their knowledge into ignorance, and I return the wise to their backs, and I make their deeds known to the people, and I affirm the word of My servants, and I complete the saying of My messengers.' Then he said: 'I am the Lord who created these things. Woe to the one who disputes with his Creator and does not know that he is made of clay! Perhaps the clay would say to the potter: 'Why do you make me?' Or perhaps it would say to him: 'Am I not the one you made?' Woe to the one who says to his father: 'Why did you give birth to me?' Or to his mother: 'Why did you carry me?' Thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israel and its Savior: 'I am the One who created the heaven and stretched it with My hands and all its hosts, and I placed in it the brilliant stars.'
Mention of what the interpreters need - and may Allah, glorified and exalted is He, increase the certainty for every Muslim - from the story of Jesus, blessings and peace be upon him, in his birth and what relates to this Surah from the beginning of his matter and its end, and some of the signs that appeared by his hands and the wisdom that came from his tongue indicating that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger, and other than that from the four Gospels that are in the hands of the Christians today. And I have included the words of some of them into one another and gathered what was scattered from the meanings in their contexts such that everything became one discourse:
He said: As for the majority of the context for it: This is the book of the birth of Jesus the Messiah, son of David, son of Abraham, blessings and peace be upon them. Then he said: For every generation from Abraham to David, there are fourteen generations. And from David to Zerubbabel, there are fourteen generations. And from Zerubbabel to the Messiah, there are fourteen generations. When Mary, his mother, was betrothed to Joseph before they separated, she found herself pregnant by the Spirit of the Holy. And Joseph, her betrothed, was a righteous man and did not want to expose her, and he intended to divorce her secretly. While he was thinking about this, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying: O Joseph, son of David! Do not be afraid to take Mary, your betrothed, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name 'Immanuel,' which means: God with us. Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him Mary, his betrothed, and did not know her until she had brought forth her firstborn son. And he called his name Jesus.
{"translation": "And in the Gospel of Luke: And when it was in those days - that is, the days of the birth of Yahya ibn Zakariya, peace be upon them - a decree went out from Augustus Caesar (p-432) that all the inhabitants should be registered. This was the first registration in the province of Phrygia in Syria. So all of them went to register, each one in his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house of David and his lineage, to register with Mary, his betrothed, who was pregnant. While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. So she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them where they stayed. And there were shepherds in that region, staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. The angel said to them: Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tid
And when eight days were completed, they brought him to be circumcised, and they called his name Jesus, as the angel had called him before he was conceived in the womb. And when the days of her purification were completed - according to the law of Moses - they went up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord that every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord, and to offer a sacrifice for him - as it is written in the law of the Lord - a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. So he came by the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God, saying: 'Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.' And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: 'Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against.' And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And coming in that instant, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem. So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him. His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. And when they had finished the days, as they returned, the boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and his mother did not know it. But supposing him to have been in the company, they went a day's journey, and sought him among their relatives and acquaintances. So when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. Now it was after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. So when they saw him, they were amazed; and his mother said to him: 'Son, why have you done this to us? Look, your father and I have sought you anxiously.' And he said to them: 'Why did you seek me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?' But they did not understand the statement which he spoke to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. But his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
At that time, Herod and the Romans secretly called the Magi. They confirmed the time in which the star appeared to them. They sent them to Bethlehem, saying: Go and search diligently for the child. When you find him, inform me so that I may come and prostrate to him. When they heard from the king, they went, and behold, the star which they saw in the east led them until it came and stood where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. They came to the house and saw the child with Mary, his mother. They fell down and worshipped him, and they opened their treasures and presented to him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. It was revealed to them in a dream not to return to Herod, but to go another way to their own country. When they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying: Arise, take the child and his mother, and flee to the land of Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the child to destroy him. He arose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt, and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: Out of Egypt I called my son. Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the Magi, was exceedingly angry, and he sent forth and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all its districts from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the Magi. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted for her children, because they are no more. Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying: Arise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel; for those who sought the child's life are dead. Then he arose, took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee. And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets: He shall be called a Nazarene. And in the Gospel of Luke: When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. When they had finished the days, as they returned, the boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and his mother did not know it. But supposing him to have been in the company, they went a day's journey and sought him among their relatives and acquaintances, but did not find him. They returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. Now it was after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. So when they saw him, they were amazed; and his mother said to him: Son, why have you done this to us? Look, your father and I have sought you anxiously. And he said to them: Why did you seek me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business? But they did not understand the statement which he spoke to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. But Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
He said: In those days, John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea - to the end of what has been mentioned earlier about the glad tidings of Yahya, blessings and peace be upon him. Then he said: At that time, Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John refused him and said: I am the one who needs to be baptized by you, and you come to me? Jesus answered: Let it be so now; it is proper for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he left him, and Jesus was baptized. Immediately, he came up from the water, and the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of Allah descending like a dove and coming to him. And Mark said: At that time, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan River by John. As soon as he came up from the water, he saw the heavens torn open, and the Spirit of the Holy Spirit descended like a dove upon him. Immediately, the Spirit drove him into the wilderness, and he was there for forty days and forty nights, being with the wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. And Matthew said: And he fasted for forty days and forty nights. And Luke said: And when all the people were baptized, Jesus was baptized, and while he prayed, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his ministry, and he was thought to be the son of Joseph. And Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit and returned from the Jordan, and the Spirit led him for forty days, (p-440) during which he ate nothing. Then he said: And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread throughout the region. He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. And he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, and as was his custom, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, and when he had opened the scroll, he found the place where it is written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Then he closed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them: Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. And in the Gospel of John: Jesus said: If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another who bears witness of me, and I know that the witness which he witnesses of me is true. You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. But I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. And I have a greater witness than John's; for the works which the Father has given me to finish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has testified of me; you have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. But you do not have his word abiding in you, because whom he sent, him you do not believe. Search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of me. I do not receive honor from men, but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you: Moses, in whom you trust. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words? - This is the end of what was chosen to be established here, and in it are words that are rejected in our law, the mention of the father and the son, and a warning has been given regarding such matters.
