And as if when she heard that, she was filled with wonder, so that this led her to hasten to ask before the completion of the speech by saying, "O my Lord," meaning, "O You who are gracious to me, how can it be for me?" And since her disbelief was regarding the mere possibility of conception, not conditioned by it being male, as in the story of Zakariya, blessings and peace be upon him, she said, "A son," and she said, "And no human has touched me," due to her understanding of that only in relation to herself. Al-Harali said: And 'human' is the name of the visible aspect of the human being in its entirety, like the face in the highest stature, from the meaning of 'skin,' which is the outer layer of the flesh. It is concluded that this thought may have occurred to her, but she did not express it, so the angel, blessings and peace be upon him, knew that it occupied her mind, and he answered her about it to clarify her understanding by saying, "So it will be," meaning, "Like this great act of high status will be what I have given you glad tidings of." And since her disbelief was regarding the mere act of creation without any cause at all, he expressed the reasoning for that by mentioning creation, saying, "Allah," meaning, "the Greatest King, against whom there is no objection, creates," meaning, "He decrees, makes, and invents whatever He wills." So he expressed it by creation as an indication that the wonder is in it, not in the mere act, as in the case of Yahya, blessings and peace be upon him, of making the old man like the young man. Then he clarified that with what showed its ease by saying, "When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is," clarifying the word.
