Commentary

And when the chosen ones are more specific than the general beloved ones, some of the chosen ones are made clear, and what He has honored them with is a confirmation of His saying, glorified and exalted is He, in the noble sacred hadith: 'When I love him, I become his hearing by which he hears, his sight by which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot by which he walks.' This serves as a reminder to the delegation of the Christians of Najran and others that just as He has chosen for Himself a religion, He has chosen people to embody it, who love Him, obey Him, be loyal to His allies, and oppose His enemies. They are not among the attributes of the disbelievers in any way. It is said that when He, glorified and exalted is He, likened His actions in resemblance and others to His words, and made it known that the most upright path is to return the ambiguous from it to the clear and definitive, and to resort to uncovering the problematic with a firm and straight belief. He clarified that the position away from this most upright path is to stand with worldly appearances, along with leadership and others, and to be a thousand in religion while being idle in it with empty wishes. He concluded that and its consequences by threatening anyone who turns away from the truth and takes to shaping his image in the wombs as he wishes, based on what has been observed of that, and there is no doubt in it from the conditions of people who are among His chosen servants who are devoted to what pleases Him. It is said: And perhaps it is better: When He, glorified and exalted is He, informed that the people of the Book did not differ except after knowledge had come to them, and they disbelieved in that, and He linked it to what followed it until He concluded with the command to follow the Messenger and that He does not love the disbelievers for turning away from His Messengers. The soul's longing to know the Messengers who come with knowledge, whose opposition necessitates disbelief, became intense. He made them clear with His saying: And Al-Harali said: When the station of this Surah is to reveal the definitive and the ambiguous in creation and command, He, glorified and exalted is He, preceded in clarifying the ambiguous creation of Jesus, peace be upon him, the face of the prior selection for humanity, and who among it from the offspring, so that the equivalence of the creation of Jesus, peace be upon him, appears finally to the prior creation of Adam, peace be upon him, first, so that they may be two examples encompassing the ends of the universe in the elevation of his spirit and the descent of the surface of his soil. And that He, glorified and exalted is He, sent down the spirit to the human creation as He said: 'And if We had made him an angel, We would have made him a man, and We would have confused them as they confuse one another.' [Al-An'am: 9] The effect of that confusion appeared in what occurred to the people of deviation regarding Jesus, just as He elevated the clay creation step by step to the perfection of formation until He breathed into it from His spirit. Thus, the elevation of the human being to the breath was for the spirit to descend into the human clay, which was completed by the existence of Jesus, peace be upon him, just as the existence of Adam, peace be upon him, was completed by the breath.

And when the essence of the manifestation was a high light, which the Truth, glorified and exalted is He, descended in the ranks of development, formation, and creation, until He began a worldly realm containing the four corners and the three origins. Its luminosity was hidden in the existence of its kinds. Allah, glorified and exalted is He, purified this human creation from the totality of that. He was the chosen one of Allah. The address informed about his transformation into purity by creation. Then He said, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾, meaning by His majesty, greatness, and perfection in His encompassing and power, ﴿has chosen﴾, meaning for knowledge and prophethood from Him, glorified and exalted is He, to His creation and the vicegerency for Him in His dominion, ﴿Adam﴾, your first father, about whom you do not doubt that He created him from clay. This is a reminder for those who erred regarding the matter of Jesus, blessings and peace be upon him, that the greatest thing they found strange about Jesus was that he was from (p-343) without a male. And Adam's situation is stranger than his, as he is neither from a male nor a female nor from the kind of the living beings, as will be stated clearly after this hint for those with correct understanding.

Al-Harali said: He chose him from all of His creation, which He manifested as a kingdom and dominion, in creation and command. He made His name flow from the most apparent of His earthly manifestations and the closest of them. He named him Adam from the soil of the earth, in the form of 'Afdal,' which is the ultimate perfection of humanity and soil. Among what He, glorified and exalted is He, manifested in the choosing of Adam is what Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, mentioned in his saying: When Allah, glorified and exalted is He, created, He made clear His favor to the angels and showed them what He had chosen for him from prior knowledge, in that He taught him when He asked him the names of things. So Allah, glorified and exalted is He, made Adam a sanctuary, a Kaaba, a door, and a qibla, to which the righteous and the spiritual beings prostrated. Then He alerted Adam to his trust and revealed to him the danger of what He entrusted him with after He named him an Imam before the angels. Thus, his alerting him to the danger of his trust was the fruit of his choosing. And Noah is your second father, who brought him forth from between two youthful parents in your continuous custom. Al-Harali said: He informed that He favored Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, with a choice over the choice of Adam, in a progression to the perfection of human existence and an elevation to the spiritual existence of Jesus. He chose Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, by making him the first messenger with His oneness, in that he refuted polytheism and established the word of faith with the saying 'There is no deity but Allah,' for what had preceded between Adam and Noah was the worship of idols and statues. So this choosing was an inner choosing for that apparent choosing, thus the choosing was confirmed. And those who were drowned in the flood with Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, from the human offspring were purified from their impurities. Just as He purified Adam from all of existence, He purified Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, and his saved children from the cast-off of the disbelieving human creation, who do not give birth except to a wicked, ungrateful one. There was no purity in them nor in the repository of their offspring that would be suitable for the merit of the sincerity which was exclusively granted to Noah, blessings and peace be upon him.

'And when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you and from Noah' [Al-Ahzab: 7]. So the covenant of Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, was what he upheld of the word of oneness and the rejection of idols and tyrants which the oppressors took from the offspring of Adam. Thus, the luminous ones were purified by the word of oneness from him. So Noah, blessings and peace be upon him, and those who were saved with him were the elite of his time, just as Adam was the elite of his time. And when most of the prophets were from the lineage of Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him, it increased his glorification by his saying: 'And the family of Ibrahim,' meaning those in whom He manifested miracles, especially in bringing forth a child from two old parents who could not have children like them. And in that is an indication that Jesus, blessings and peace be upon him, is like them, for he is one of them. Likewise, His saying: 'And the family of Imran,' in His saying: 'over the worlds,' is an indication that he is like the rest of his relatives.
