Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, weaned them from the allegiance to the disbelievers, outwardly and inwardly, by what necessitated the restriction to the allegiance of the people of Allah, to negate any association with disbelief in anything of Allah. And a person might ally with a disbeliever while claiming to love Allah, glorified and exalted is He. And He concluded with His mercy, glorified and exalted is He, towards His servants. And mercy may sometimes arise from love that necessitates closeness. Thus, the mention of it might lead to reliance, and for this reason, confusion occurred between the two parties. For this, glorified and exalted is He, established a sign and said: - And al-Harali said: When the greatest of what the stations of the seekers towards Allah, glorified and exalted is He, who intend towards Him from the beginning of the state of remembrance, which is the culmination of the ten ordered stations in His saying, glorified and exalted is He, "Indeed, the Muslims" [Al-Ahzab: 35], is the love of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, since love is a hidden connection that the one who senses it knows its essence. He, glorified and exalted is He, established the proof against those who claim closeness to Allah and the assertion in the essence of what the saying reaches from His love by informing them that whoever reaches the point of loving Allah, glorified and exalted is He, should follow this Prophet whom Allah, glorified and exalted is He, loves. So whoever follows him, Allah loves him. Thus, the proof was established against every seeker, traveler, and one who draws near. For the ultimate goal of creation is to love Allah, and the concern of the Truth is to love the servant. So He, glorified and exalted is He, rejected all those encompassed by selection, choosing, and distinction, and directed them towards the path of following His beloved whom He loves, as he, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "If Moses were among you, he would have no choice but to follow me." And if this is the case with Moses, peace be upon him, it is more obligatory for those who claim his religion to follow him. The essence of this is that when he, blessings and peace be upon him, was the beginning in eternity, it is necessary for the end to be in the Hereafter. So Allah, glorified and exalted is He, obligated the creation among those who love Allah, glorified and exalted is He, to follow him, and He conveyed this through a tongue indicating the goodness and reaching Allah, glorified and exalted is He, since he is the Prophet of glad tidings. And this should be more compelling for those who refuse to follow him - it has ended. So He, glorified and exalted is He, said: "Say, if you love Allah" meaning the one encompassing the attributes of perfection, being sincere in your love for Him, believing that He is at the utmost perfection. For perfection is beloved for its own sake. "Then follow me," al-Harali said: He, blessings and peace be upon him, explained the apparent meaning of following him by saying: "In righteousness." And the essence of its truth is faith in Allah and preference for His servants, and piety, which is the key to matters and the root of goodness. It is the rejection of the servant's self-sufficiency in anything of his own, neither from property nor from dominion nor from action nor from description nor from essence, until he is with his Lord as he was with Him in His eternity before he existed for himself, so that all his matters are with his Lord in his existence as they were with his Lord before his existence for himself. And the truth of piety, which is the ultimate goal of piety, has been interpreted as the servant being grateful and not ungrateful, remembering and not forgetting, obeying and not disobeying. It has ended.
The Imam said: Love necessitates complete inclination towards the beloved and turning away from others. This is concluded. So whoever claims to love Him and contradicts the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, is a liar, and the Book of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, refutes him. "Allah loves you" means the One who has the most beautiful names and the highest attributes, a love whose signs have appeared through what He has informed the intellect. For the matter that saves to the utmost salvation is indeed the love of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, for the servant, not the love of the servant for Allah. For it may be that he has a state in which he thinks he loves Allah, while the reality is that it is not as he assumed, due to his actions that displease Him, glorified and exalted is He. The true sign of that is to return all matters to Allah. Then Allah will act with the servant as a lover does, with good praise and honoring through reward. Al-Harali said: For whoever returns the trust to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, Allah loves him, so he becomes His hearing, sight, hand, and foot. And if Allah loves a servant, He grants him ease and saves him from the possibility of being one who loves Allah. So whoever loves Allah and is loved by Him, resides in the beginning of His care, and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, strengthens him. This is concluded. Indeed, He, glorified and exalted is He, indicated that the guidance arising from compassion through honoring with blessings is generally for the beloved and others. And the proof of divine love is the following of the caller: "Act, for each is facilitated for what he was created for. As for the one who is among the people of happiness, he will be facilitated for the deeds of the people of happiness. And as for the one who is among the people of misery, he will be facilitated for the deeds of the people of misery." "No one has drawn near to Me with anything like fulfilling what I have made obligatory upon them, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary acts until I love him."
And since the religion is severe, no one will strive against it except that it overcomes him, due to what the servant has of incapacity and the object of worship has of great matter. This follows the informing that with the delivery of reward, punishment is lifted. Al-Harali said: And since among the signs of Allah's love for him, blessings and peace be upon him, is what was revealed to him in His saying: "Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory" [Al-Fath: 1] "So that Allah may forgive you what has preceded of your sin and what will follow" [Al-Fath: 2], He has granted whoever Allah loves by following him a share of it in His saying: "And He will forgive you your sins," meaning absolutely, and the sin of every servant according to him, for the original meaning of sin is the lowest rank of the servant. So every person of rank, his highest is his good deeds and his lowest is his sin. Therefore, in every rank, there is repentance, until repentance occurs from repentance, and existence and witnessing are completed.
And when this matter is among the most specific that occurs, and it is among what is beneath it the ranks of the specific creation in their transition from Islam to their love for Allah, glorified and exalted is He, He concluded with that which clarifies the states of what pertains to those beneath this perfection, saying: ﴿And Allah﴾ meaning the One who has all perfection ﴿is Forgiving, Merciful﴾ meaning for whoever has not reached the rank of Allah's love for him due to what occurs during his states that necessitate forgiveness and call for mercy, where he has not reached love. So he is shown mercy after forgiveness, and he is forgiven after love, and he is the one who intends. This is concluded.
