Commentary
And when the matter of enduring hardships became abundant in these verses; and the tasting of the bitterness of harm; and the plunging into wars; and the trivialization of the great calamities; and the encouragement towards divine knowledge; and the legal manners from the fundamentals; and the branches; detachment from the familiar; to what He commands - glorified and exalted is He - of acts of obedience; and He concluded with the tasting of a group from the People of the Book of those bitter experiences; the result of that - undoubtedly - is His saying (the Exalted) - alerting to the greatness of what He calls to; because it encompasses all manners -: "O you who have believed"; meaning: with all that we have mentioned in this surah; "Be patient"; meaning: establish patience; confirming your faith upon all that patience is required for; from what the souls dislike; from what the two radiant ones have called you to; "And be steadfast"; meaning: establish steadfastness against the enemies from the disbelievers; and the hypocrites; and all other sinners; so let them not be more patient upon their falsehood than you are upon your truth; "And hold fast"; meaning: by tying horses at the frontiers in opposition to what they have of horses; to intimidate them; and to be cautious of them - this is its origin; then the term 'holding fast' became applied to remaining at the frontiers; for the purpose of defending the religion; even if there are no horses; but it is also applied to maintaining acts of obedience -; then He commanded the essence of all that by saying: "And fear Allah"; meaning: in all of that; by being watchful of Him; being aware of all that you can know; of His greatness; by His grace; and His punishment; "So that you may succeed"; meaning: so that your state may be like that of one whose success is hoped for; and his victory; with what he desires of victory over the enemies; and the winning of the life of the martyrs; and this verse - as you see - is a reminder of the condition for the acceptance of the supplication for victory over the disbelievers; the conclusion of which is "Al-Baqarah": "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear; it will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or made a mistake. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people" [Al-Baqarah: 286]; a call to remind the possessors of intellect to be watchful of the One, the Living, the Sustainer; who nothing is hidden from Him in the earth; nor in the heavens; in following His verses; and opposing His enemies; just as the one before it [was a reminder] for those who believed in all the books; this Qur'an which confirms what is before it; and the Torah; and the Gospel; all of that for the success of the criterion with victory; and the punishment of the people of disbelief by their hands; enabling from Allah; and Allah is Exalted in Might, and capable of retribution; returning to the excerpt in the best manner - and Allah knows best what is correct; and with Him is the best return.
