And when the believers from the People of the Two Books had a share in the migration, along with the honor of what they were upon from the religion, the root of which is truth, they were a second group among the emigrants. And much of this Surah was revealed in addressing the People of the Book, debating with them, and warning against their deceit and trickery.
And the news that they (p-166) hate the believers, despite their love for them, and that they do not believe in their Book, and that they will hear much harm from them, until the conclusion was reached in describing them, that they have exchanged the verses of Allah for a small price, perhaps leading to despair of their faith. Following that was praise for their believers, and the style changed from saying, for example, 'And those who believed from the People of the Book,' to entice them into alliance after training them with warning against them, regarding their opposition and enmity. So He said: 'And indeed among the People of the Book'—meaning: the Jews and the Christians—'there are those who believe in Allah,' meaning: the one who possesses the attributes of perfection. And He indicated the condition that validates this faith by saying: 'and what was revealed to you,' meaning: from this Qur'an; 'and what was revealed to them,' meaning: all of it; so he submits to what he commands them to follow this Arab Prophet. And to Him is the reference in His saying—gathering the consideration of the meaning of 'who' to magnify the description of humility regarding absolute faith: 'humble before Allah,' meaning: because He is the King who has no equal; not turning away from the descent of the familiar. 'They do not exchange the verses of Allah,' meaning: which, when they reflect upon, they know that none can achieve it except one who encompasses majesty and beauty, commanding them to do so; 'for a small price,' due to what they have of leadership and influence—just as was previously mentioned in the description of most of them. They clarify it and guide to it, and they do not distort it. (p-167) And when He (the Exalted) informed about the goodness of their mercy towards Him, He informed about their reward with Him, which delights the souls and inspires the ambitions. So He said: 'Those are,' meaning: the ones of great rank; 'for them is their reward,' meaning: what they hope for; then He increased them in it, desiring to honor them, by saying: 'with their Lord,' meaning: the One who nurtured them, and His kindness towards them has not ceased for a moment; all of this is to glorify Him, for indeed they have the reward twice.
And when these affirmations of good tidings necessitated the completion of the reward; and its fulfillment; and its perfection; it had previously been established that He (glorified and exalted is He) gives everyone; male and female; their reward; and does not waste anything; and He rewards the wrongdoer; and the doer of good; and it was customary that the abundance of creation is a reason for the length of the time of reckoning; and that is a reason for the length of waiting; and that is a reason for the hindrance of a person from his responsibilities; and for the constriction of his chest due to the scattering of his determination; and his distraction; this was a matter of wonder that leads to the illusion of what should not be; so He removed this illusion by stating that His (glorified and exalted is He) affair is otherwise; because He is not preoccupied by one matter from another; by His saying: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾; meaning: by what He has of majesty; and greatness; and perfection; ﴿is swift in reckoning﴾;
