Commentary
And when they implored with these two verses for salvation from the Fire, they sought intercession by mentioning their hastening to respond to the caller, by saying: "Our Lord"; and when their condition was such, due to their knowledge that they would not cease from shortcomings, even if they exerted themselves greatly, for no one is able to truly measure Allah, it was similar to the state of one who does not believe. The situation necessitated emphasis, indicating their self-deprecation by acknowledging their sins. They said - while knowing that the one addressed is aware of everything -: "Indeed, we"; thus they emphasized the 'noon' for the sake of confirmation. "We heard a caller"; meaning: from You; and they further magnified it by mentioning what the call was from, constrained after the generality, by saying: "calling"; Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi said: "It is the Qur'an; not all of them saw the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him."
And when the 'lam' is suitable for reasoning, and the meaning of "to" was expressed by it, it was said: "for faith"; then they interpreted it, magnifying it, by saying: "that you believe in your Lord"; then He informed of their hastening to respond by saying: "So we believed"; meaning: after hearing; then they removed what might be presumed of their inclination towards a sense of self-admiration by their statement, explicitly indicating what the emphasis conveyed to one whose knowledge encompasses: "Our Lord, forgive us our sins"; meaning: those which we committed before faith, by accepting faith from us; so do not let our hearts deviate, and it becomes a nullifier of what preceded it with You, just as it was a nullifier in the apparent law; and likewise what we neglected after faith, even if it was without repentance; and to this they referred by saying: "And remove from us our evils"; meaning: by granting us success, after You have honored us with faith, to avoid the major sins by performing the acts of obedience that expiate the minor sins; "And cause us to die with the righteous"; meaning: we have no evils.
