Commentary
And when he mentioned this great kingdom; and concluded with the comprehensiveness of power; he indicated that by alerting to the contemplation of it; which necessitates the oneness of Allah; which is the greatest objective of this surah; calling to faith; which necessitates salvation from punishment; because the greatest purpose of revealing the Qur'an is to illuminate the hearts with knowledge; and that cannot be achieved except by the utmost submission; and that is the following of the Hanif way; which depends on the truthfulness of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him; so He - glorified and exalted is He - began the surah with signs of his truthfulness; with the miraculous nature of the Qur'an; by revealing it - along with the miracle of its structure - through the tongue of the unlettered Prophet; to the doubts; and clarifying the hidden matters; and He exposed the obstinacy of the People of the Book; and He fully exposed them; so when that was completed in the best manner; organized with exquisite wisdom; of encouragement; and warning; He began to spread the lights of knowledge; by establishing its close signs; and unveiling its wondrous veils; so He said: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth"; meaning: regarding their vastness; and what is in them of benefits; and He alerted to the change that indicates the changer; by saying: "and the alternation of night and day"; meaning: an alternation that is - as you see - to the utmost precision; by being on a straight path; and a course that can only be by the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing; "for signs"; meaning: regarding all that the messengers brought from the Creator; and He increased the encouragement for contemplation and the urging towards it; and the incitement for it; by saying: "for those of understanding"; and He - glorified and exalted is He - mentioned in the sister of this verse; in Surah Al-Baqarah; eight types of evidence; but here He limited it to three; because the seeker needs many evidences at the beginning of the path; so when he is illuminated, his need for that diminishes; and the abundance of evidences is like a veil that distracts him from immersing his heart in the depths of knowledge; and He limited here from the effects of creation to the celestial; because they are more overwhelming; and more dazzling; and the wonders in them are greater; and the transition of the heart from them to His greatness - glorified and exalted is He - and His majesty is more intense and quicker; and He concluded that with what is for the beginning of the path; the intellect; and He concluded this with its essence; because it is for the one who has freed himself from the whispers of Satan; and the distractions of the illusions that prevent reaching the truth of certainty; rather the knowledge of certainty.
