Commentary

And when He informed - glorified and exalted is He - that they have amassed wealth and status by concealing knowledge and showing the opposite of it, which includes love for the people of their religion in them, and praise for them that they are upon the correct religion, and that they are people of knowledge; they are therefore worthy of being followed. He said - glorified and exalted is He - informing about their outcome, warning against a similar state for every person: "Do not think"; according to the reading of the congregation; "those who rejoice in what they have brought"; meaning: from what its apparent contradicts its hidden; and they have reached through it worldly goals, from wealth and leadership, and other than that. Meaning: let them not think of themselves; and in the reading of the Kufans and Ya'qub; with the address; the meaning is: do not think of them, O observer of their cunning; and their flourishing because of it in this world, that they are reaching good; "and they love to be praised"; meaning: that praise exists with beautiful description upon them; "for what they did not do"; meaning: for that hidden which they did not do. Ibn Hisham said in the biography: "that people say: 'Scholars'; while they are not people of knowledge; they have not borne them upon guidance or truth."

And when that knowledge caused their destruction, He said: "So do not think of them"; meaning: let them not think of themselves; according to the reading of Ibn Kathir and Abu Amr; with the inclusion of the 'ba'; and according to the reading of the congregation, the meaning is: do not think of them, O observer; "as being safe from the punishment"; rather, they are in a state of destruction from it; "and for them is a painful punishment."
