Commentary
And when Allah - glorified and exalted is He - consoled His Prophet ﷺ regarding their denial of him by what his brothers among the messengers encountered; and that there must be a return to Him; so that those who are of his party may succeed; and those who ally with his enemies and the people of his party may suffer; He repeated the consolation in a manner that encompasses the believers; and presented it as a report about the occurrence of great calamities which are among the signs of the righteous; in the abode of hardships; elevating them in the abode of permanence; He said - affirming that the one who stands in service denies that his deity can harm him; this is the nature of mankind; even if he adopts the opposite; and mentioning it before its occurrence serves to lessen it; by preparing the soul for it; and the construction of the action indicates that the affliction is inevitable; not that it comes from a specific direction -: "You will surely be tested"; meaning: you will be treated as the tested one; to distinguish the believer from the hypocrite; "in your wealth"; meaning: through various forms of spending; "and your selves"; meaning: through being struck in jihad; and otherwise; just as you have faced what you faced of harm by My permission; surely after that, more harm will befall you as I have decreed with My tradition among My chosen servants; and those of My love; and this was directed to the verse which indicates that the fulfillment of rewards for good deeds is among that which grants success; suitable in terms of encouraging everything that serves as a cause for that; from patience over what He - glorified and exalted is He - tests with; from all that He commands regarding obligations; or permits among calamities; and He prioritized wealth because it is - as it is said - the equivalent of the soul; and perhaps death may be easier for a person than poverty that leads to humiliation; through mockery and disgrace; by what his hand falls short of due to the loss of noble deeds; and how good is the mention of this verse following the story of "Uhud"; in which killing occurred; due to the eagerness for wealth; and its mention serves as a justification for the hatred of the people of the Book; and others among the disbelievers.
And when that day was a day of trial and purification; and it was perhaps hoped for relief after it; the soul became settled on that; so its agitation intensified with what comes from similar situations; and this is not from the morals of those who strive. He intended - glorified and exalted is He - to settle the souls on what the abode is naturally burdened with; and the weights; so He informed that the trial does not decrease by it; rather, there must be after it more trials; and hearing distress from the rest of the disbelievers; and He encouraged the banner of the righteous; patience; which He presented at the beginning of the Surah; then before the story of 'Uhud'; and built upon it; indicating that it is something that deserves to be emphasized; and there should be no hesitation in it; so He said: "And you will surely hear"; meaning: after this day; "from those"; and when the intention was to equate the knowledgeable with the ignorant in blame; He exalted the knowledgeable from mention; so He built for the passive; His saying: "They were given the Scripture" [Aal 'Imran: 187]; and when their receiving it did not take up the past time; He included the neighbor; so He said: "from before you"; meaning: from the Jews; and the Christians; "and from those who associated partners"; meaning: from the unlettered; "much harm"; meaning: from the slander against the religion; and others; because of this incident; or others; "And if you are patient"; meaning: you develop the trait of patience regarding that; and others; "and you are conscious of Allah"; meaning: and you make between yourselves; and between what angers Allah - glorified and exalted is He - a protection; by lowering yourselves from much of their responses relying on repelling them with swords; and inflicting blows; "for indeed that"; meaning: the matter of high rank; "is from the determination of affairs"; meaning: the things that are worthy of being determined to act upon; and there should be no hesitation in it; nor should any obstacle prevent it; for the story of 'Uhud' has been concluded; with what has preceded; as a proof for it; from His saying: "Certainly, hatred has appeared from their mouths" [Aal 'Imran: 118]; until He concluded with His saying: "And if you are patient and conscious of Allah, their plot will not harm you at all" [Aal 'Imran: 120]; what He informed here that it is from the determination of affairs.
