Commentary

And when this surah contains many of the subtleties that they have concealed from their book which they have made into sheets; they show it; and they hide much; and in this verse specifically; among that which necessitates its confirmation by him ﷺ. And he - glorified and exalted is He - knew that most of them are obstinate; this caused him to be consoled in the denial of the deniers among them; by his saying: ﴿So if they deny you﴾; it was as if it was said: This which I have informed you of necessitates your confirmation; so if they do not do it; rather they denied; ﴿Then indeed﴾; and when the context is to establish their exaggeration in harshness; and rudeness; (p-144) and disbelief; and lack of fulfillment; and since the surah is the surah of monotheism; and the messengers are in agreement on it; and each of them has come with the utmost clarity; and removed every ambiguity; he dropped the feminine ta; because it might indicate a type of weakness; so he said: ﴿Messengers were denied﴾; and when the consolation of a person is more intense with those who are contemporaneous with him in time; he affirmed the connection; so he said: ﴿Before you﴾; meaning: So you have in them a consolation; and by them an example; ﴿They came with clear signs﴾; meaning: from the miracles; ﴿and the scriptures﴾; meaning: from the sheets containing admonitions; and the wisdoms that the scholar uses to warn against the evils; ﴿and the illuminating book﴾; meaning: the one that gathers the rulings; and others; clarifying that it is the straight path.
