Commentary
And when the offering is of the kind of expenditures; and from what is made clear by it is the generosity of souls and their stinginess; the arrangement of the verse of the offering here is good; by His saying - refuting another doubt of theirs; and clarifying that the prophets killed them -: "Those who said"; as a retreat from what they must do of hastening to faith; "Indeed, Allah"; meaning: the One with whom no command belongs to anyone; "has commanded us"; and they have lied in that; "that we should not believe in a messenger"; meaning: whoever he may be; "until he brings us an offering"; meaning: a great one; which we bring closer to Allah (glorified and exalted is He); so it will be characterized by the fact that "the fire consumes it"; at the time of bringing it closer to Him; and in that is the greatest clarification that they did not intend - by their saying: "Indeed, Allah is poor" [Al-Imran: 181]; where they requested charity - except for doubt; where the approach to Allah with wealth is from their religion by which they draw near to Allah; rather, they claimed that no religion is valid without it.
And when they fabricated this doubt, He commanded - glorified is He - to refute it; by His saying: "Say, indeed messengers have come to you"; in addition to a messenger; and when their duration did not encompass the past time, He established the connection; and said: "before me" like Zakariya; and his son Yahya; and Isa - peace be upon them - "with clear signs"; meaning: from the miracles; "and with what you have said"; meaning: from the offering; for indeed, the spoils were not made lawful - as in the authentic narration - for anyone who was before us; so it was not made lawful for Isa - peace be upon him - and it was not among what he abrogated of the rulings of the Torah; and it was gathered; and fire would descend from the sky and consume it; except if there was treachery in it; "So why did you kill them?"; meaning: your ancestors killed them; and you were pleased with that; so you participated with them in it; "if you are truthful"; meaning: in that you believe in whoever came to you in the manner you mentioned; and in that is a refutation against the two groups; the Jews who claim that they killed him; claiming that it was commanded to them to believe in whoever came to them with that; and the Christians who submit to what the Jews claimed about his killing; implying that he is not a god.
