Commentary
And when it was among the foundations of the Surah that spending; and it has been mentioned in other verses praising the righteous for it; and urging them towards it; and it has been mentioned that the disbelievers hastened in disbelief; Abu Sufyan in spending in the way of Satan against those who abandon the companions; and Nu'aym; or Abd al-Qays; in striving for that; and those who were quick to engage in jihad had included in their actions the willingness to give what Allah had granted them of souls; and wealth; and Allah - glorified and exalted is He - had informed of what they have with Him of a life that is better than their life which they wasted in His love; and the provision which is better than what they spent in His way; Allah - glorified and exalted is He - condemned the stingy regarding their souls; and wealth in the way of Allah; so He said - addressing him ﷺ; for it is more suitable for his joy; and more certain in fulfilling the promise -: And do not think; meaning: you; O best of creation - this is according to the reading of Hamzah; and with the others the subject is connected in His saying: ﴿Those who are stingy﴾; meaning: about the obligatory rights; ﴿With what Allah has granted them﴾; meaning: with His majesty; and the glory of His perfection; ﴿From His bounty﴾; meaning: for their deserving of it; by their stinginess; ﴿It is better for them﴾; meaning: for the growth of wealth by that; (p-138) ﴿But it is﴾; meaning: stinginess; ﴿Worse for them﴾; because they - while Allah has made stinginess a cause of loss for their wealth - ﴿They will be encircled﴾; meaning: by the action of whoever commands him to do that; whoever it may be; with utmost ease for him; ﴿What they were stingy with﴾; meaning: it will be made for them - by a true promise; with no contradiction in it; after the granting to them - a collar; that He will make it a snake; meaning: a great terrifying snake; that will encircle a person from them; surrounding his neck; striking him on both sides of his face; ﴿On the Day of Resurrection﴾; because Allah - glorified and exalted is He - will inherit it from them; after having granted them in it; and He will make it because of that granting a punishment upon them; Al-Bukhari - may Allah be pleased with him - narrated in the tafsir; from Abu Huraira - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever Allah has granted wealth and does not pay its zakat; his wealth will be represented to him as a bald-headed snake; with two fangs; that will encircle him on the Day of Resurrection; taking him by his jaws; meaning by his cheeks - saying: I am your wealth; I am your treasure." Then he recited this verse.
And when this was a request from them for spending; and the requester from us is in need of what he requests; and the one with wealth when he knows that it is going away; and that his wealth is inherited from him; he will act with it; Allah informed of His richness in a way that encourages them to spend; so He said - adding to what you estimate: "Because it is the fruit of his being from His bounty, so to Allah belongs all that is in their hands" -: ﴿And to Allah﴾; meaning: to Him belongs all perfection; ﴿Is the inheritance of the heavens and the earth﴾; meaning: that which is in both of them; by bringing back - glorified and exalted is He - all the living beings; and if (p-139) He grants them; and annihilates all that He has given them of possessions; and He will be the inheritor of all of that.
And when these sentences were about informing of the unseen; of this world and the Hereafter; and since stinginess is one of the inner actions that can be hidden; and the claim of possessing its opposite; the conclusion is with His saying: ﴿And Allah﴾; meaning: the Greatest King; and since the position of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, is of the utmost purity; he directed the address to the followers; in the reading other than that of Ibn Kathir; and Abu Amr; which is more eloquent in warning than leaving it according to the context of the backbiting in their readings; and he placed the preposition first; indicating that His knowledge of their deeds reaches a level whose greatness cannot be comprehended; because that is more effective in the warning that the context necessitated: ﴿Indeed, He is All-Aware of what you do﴾.
