Commentary
And when the generality of hastening is broader than that which is by compensation; and it is broader than that which is by return; the arrangement of the verses came upon that. And when this incident revealed a number of the unseen; among the greatest of them is the distinction of the sincere in action; or in words; from others; He (the Most High) informed that this is among its secrets; in a manner that indicates the denunciation of the hypocrites by their delaying themselves from returning; and others; He said - indicating by addressing the followers to the increase of his knowledge, blessings and peace be upon him, and the high rank he has with Him - glorified and exalted is He -: "What was Allah"; meaning: with what He has of the attributes of perfection; and when the abandonment of distinction is not praiseworthy; He expressed it with the action of 'wa-dhar'; and revealed the place of the implicit; to show the honor of the description; magnifying its people; He said: "Let the believers"; meaning: those who are steadfast in the description of faith; "upon what you are upon" of mixing with the hypocrites; and those who are close to them from those who believed in a state of ambiguity; for the conviction by the claim of the tongue; as evidence of faith; "until He distinguishes the vile from the good"; by exposing the falsehood; even if its concealment is prolonged; with arduous obligations; and severe conditions; none can endure them except the sincere among the servants; the sincere in belief; "And what was Allah"; for His exclusivity in the knowledge of the unseen; "to inform you of the unseen"; meaning: He is the One who has not been manifested to the world of testimony in any way; for you to know what is in their hearts; with the possibility that the return is for the reason they mentioned in appearance; and the saying for the intensity of sorrow for their brothers; "But Allah"; meaning: the One to whom belongs all command; "chooses"; meaning: He selects a profound selection; "from His messengers whom He wills"; meaning: so He informs upon their tongues of what He wills from the unseen; as He informed that they are closer to returning to disbelief than to faith; and that they say with their mouths what is not in their hearts; and when this necessitated the obligation of believing in Him; He said: "So believe in Allah"; meaning: in the unseen; and the testimony; to Him are the best names; "and His messengers"; in that He sent them; and in that they are truthful in all that they inform about Him.
And when the estimation was: "For if you do not believe, you will have what has preceded; of the great punishment; the painful; the humiliating"; He added to it His saying: "And if you believe"; meaning: in Allah; "and His messengers"; "and you fear"; meaning: by persevering in faith; and what it necessitates of righteous deeds; "then for you is a great reward"; meaning: from Him that the plotting of your enemies will not harm you at all; as has preceded His promise to you.
