Commentary
And when He praised - glorified and exalted is He - those who hasten in His obedience and the obedience of His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him; and concluded that with a prohibition against fearing the allies of Satan; He followed that by condemning those who hasten in disbelief and prohibiting sadness on their account.
And when most people were like the hypocrites who retreated from 'Uhud; then the fighters who said: 'Is there any part for us in this matter?' - they spread rumors to Abu Amir and Abdullah ibn Ubayy to seek safety from Abu Sufyan; then they rode with Abd al-Qays or Nu'aym ibn Mas'ud; then those who responded from the people of Medina; and they spread rumors about what they said regarding the delay of the believers; and that was something that would come to mind due to the prolongation of the days of disbelief and its people prevailing; and it would undermine the hope for the shortening of its duration; and it would necessitate sadness over that; Allah, the Exalted, said - addressing the greatest of creation, their most compassionate, and their most beloved in their righteousness -: 'And let not those who hasten in disbelief sadden you'; meaning: they hasten as one who races against an opponent; 'in disbelief'; then He explained that by saying: 'Indeed, they will not harm Allah'; meaning: the One who has all greatness; 'anything'; meaning: His religion; by humiliating His supporters and those who uphold it; and He omitted the addition to magnify it and to encourage it, as He made it the one to which it is added.
And when He negated what was feared from their matter; it was a reason for questioning about the judge for them regarding their hastening; so it was said - in response -: 'Allah wills'; meaning: the One who has all authority; 'that He does not give them a share'; meaning: a portion; 'in the Hereafter'; and when the hastening in that was great; the verse was concluded with His saying: 'And for them is a great punishment'; which has encompassed all of them; because the hastening indicated that disbelief had filled their bodies, souls, and spirits.
