Commentary

And when the saying of Nu'aim ibn Mas'ud, or the caravan of Abd al-Qays, was true among the Companions - may Allah be pleased with them - there was no doubt in it, due to the evidence that stood among them. It was like that of the mutawatir, which the creatures have agreed upon. Quraysh was the bravest of people, the strongest among them, and the most noble in lineage. They were as if they were all of the people. The expression - in the general form - in His saying: ﴿Those to whom the people said﴾; meaning: Nu'aim or the caravan of Abd al-Qays; ﴿Indeed, the people﴾; meaning Quraysh; ﴿have gathered against you, so fear them﴾ - is more commendable for the Companions - may Allah be pleased with them - than the expression of one who informed them; and who gathered for them; by his specific name or description. And when the cause for their boldness to meet after this saying, which they did not doubt its truth, was the firmness of faith and the strength of certainty; He said (the Exalted): ﴿So He increased them﴾; meaning: this saying; ﴿in faith﴾; because it did not deter them from obeying Allah and His Messenger; ﴿And they said﴾; in disdain for the creatures; relying on the Creator; ﴿Sufficient for us﴾; meaning: enough for us; ﴿is Allah﴾; meaning: the Most High King, in taking care of our interests. And he said: 'The last words that Ibrahim - peace be upon him - said when he was thrown into the fire were:
