Commentary

And when he condemned the hypocrites for their return without having suffered any injury, and praised the state of the martyrs, encouraging the desire for martyrdom, and the state of those who were in a similar condition to theirs, encouraging the imitation of them, he concluded by linking happiness to the description of faith. He began to mention what their faith has produced for them of hastening to respond to what he guides them to ﷺ. This indicates that he did not hold them responsible for failing to respond to his command without an excuse except for clear hypocrisy. He said: "Those who responded"; meaning: they established the response in jihad, a confirmed and realized establishment, steadfast, by what they possess of pure faith; "for Allah and the Messenger"; meaning: not for the purpose of gain or anything else. Then he magnified their sincerity by saying - affirming the connection; for the intention of what comes from one of the two battles, not the totality of what comes after the time -: "after they had suffered injury."

And when the linking of rulings to descriptions encourages the adornment with them at the time of praise, He said - glorified and exalted is He -: "For those who have done good"; and expressed in a way that is suitable for clarification and some, so that their desire may endure and their fear may endure. He said: "Among them and fear, there is a great reward"; and these verses are a continuation of this story, whether we say: it is an indication of the battle of 'Hamra al-Asad' or the battle of 'Badr', the appointed time; for the promise was on the day of 'Uhud'; and Allah is the guide. And among what should be noted is that Al-Baydawi said - following Al-Zamakhshari -: "Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ went to 'Badr', the appointed time, with seventy riders." In the interpretation of Al-Baghawi, it is said that this was in 'Hamra al-Asad'. If it is assumed that the riders from the army were that number, and that the rest were foot soldiers, then perhaps it is so; otherwise, it is not like that. As for in 'Hamra al-Asad', the Prophet ﷺ was informed that the polytheists were intending after their separation from 'Uhud' to return, so he wanted to intimidate them and show them from himself and his companions strength. So he called out on the day of Sunday - the day after 'Uhud' - for the enemy, and that no one should go out with him except those who were present with him yesterday. They responded with hearing and obedience, so he went out in their pursuit, and appointed Ibn Um Maktum over the city. There is no doubt that they all responded, and none of them stayed behind. They had been in 'Uhud' about seven hundred, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not permit anyone who had not witnessed the battle on the day of 'Uhud' to go out with him. Men sought permission from him who had not witnessed it, and he prevented them, except for what was from Jabir ibn Abdullah - may Allah be pleased with both of them - for he permitted him due to a reason he mentioned for staying behind from 'Uhud', which was commendable.

Al-Waqidi said: "And the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, called for his banner; and it was tied and had not been untied since yesterday; so he handed it to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, and it is said to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him; and the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, went out with his head wounded; and he was injured; on his face were the marks of two blows; and he was wounded on his forehead at the roots of his hair; and his upper front teeth had fallen; and his lip had been cut from the inside; and his right shoulder was dislocated from the blow of Ibn Qami'ah; and his knees were injured - by my father he; and my mother; and my face; and my eyes - so the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, entered the mosque; and he prayed two units of prayer; and the people had gathered; and the people of the highlands came down when the call reached them; then the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, prayed two units of prayer; and he called for his horse at the door of the mosque; and Talhah, may Allah be pleased with him, received it; and he heard the caller; so he went out to see when he would march; and behold, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was wearing the armor; and the helmet; and nothing was seen of him except his eyes; so he said: "O Talhah... your weapon!" He said: I said: It is near; Talhah said: So I will go out; I will run; and I will wear my armor; for I am more concerned about the wounds of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, than I am about my own wounds; then the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, turned to Talhah and said: "Where do you see the people now?" He said: They are at the stream; the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "That is what I thought; indeed, they, O Talhah, will not reach us like yesterday; until Allah opens Mecca for us." And the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, continued with his companions; until he camped at "Hamra al-Asad"; Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, said: And most of our provisions were dates; and Sa'd ibn Ubadah, may Allah be pleased with him, carried thirty camels; until they reached Hamra; and he drove a camel; and they slaughtered on Monday; and on Tuesday; and the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, would command them during the day to gather firewood; and when evening came, he would order that the fires be lit; and every man would light a fire; for indeed, we would light five hundred fires during those nights; until we were seen from a distant place; and the mention of our camp and our fires spread in every direction; until what Allah caused to be subdued against our enemy." This is evident that they were five hundred men - and Allah knows best -; and this is supported by what has been reported from the news of those heavily wounded; Al-Waqidi said: "Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him, came and the wounds among the people were widespread; most of Banu Abd al-Ashhal were wounded; rather all of them - may Allah be pleased with them -; he said: Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commands you to seek your enemy; Usayd ibn Hudhayr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: And he had seven wounds; and he wanted to treat them: I hear and obey Allah; and His Messenger; so he took his weapon; and did not stop to treat his wounds; and he joined the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him; and Sa'd ibn Ubadah, may Allah be pleased with him, commanded his people; Banu Sa'idah to march; so they dressed and followed; and Abu Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, came to the people of Khurba; and they were treating the wounds; and he said: This is the caller of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, commanding you to seek the enemy; so they rushed to their weapons; and did not stop to treat their wounds - may Allah be pleased with them -; and forty wounded men came out from Banu Salamah - may Allah be pleased with them -; and with Al-Tufayl ibn al-Nu'man - may Allah be pleased with him - thirteen wounds; and with Qutbah ibn Amir ibn Hadidah - may Allah be pleased with him - nine wounds; until they reached the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, at the well of Abu 'Utbah to the head of the pass; they were armed; and they had lined up for the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him; and when he saw them and the wounds among them were widespread; he said: "O Allah, have mercy on Banu Salamah." And Ibn Ishaq and Al-Waqidi narrated that Abdullah ibn Sahl and Rafi' ibn Sahl - may Allah be pleased with them both - had many wounds; when the call reached them, one of them said to his companion: By Allah, if we leave a raid with the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, it would be a loss; by Allah, we have no mount to ride; and we do not know how we will proceed; Abdullah said: Let us go; Rafi' said: No, by Allah; I cannot walk; his brother said: Let us go, we will crawl; so they went out crawling; and Rafi' weakened; so Abdullah would carry him on his back for a distance; and the other would walk a distance; until they came to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, at night; and they were lighting fires; and the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, was guarded that night by Abbad ibn Bishr; and he said: "What has delayed you?" So they informed him of their condition; and he prayed for them for good; and said: "If a long time passes for you, you will have mounts of horses; and mules; and camels; and that is not better for you." And as for the raid of "Badr", the appointed time; Al-Waqidi narrated - and through him Al-Hakim in "Al-Ikleel" - as Ibn Sayyid al-Nas narrated; he said: "The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, had set out in this raid with one thousand five hundred of his companions - may Allah be pleased with them -; and the cavalry was ten; Al-Waqidi said: And a man from Damrah came; his name was Makshi ibn Amr; and he said - while the people were gathered in their market; and the companions of the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, were the majority of the people of the season -: O Muhammad; we have been informed that there is no one left of you; and I do not know you except the people of the season; so the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said to raise that to his enemy: "We have not come out except for the appointment of Abu Sufyan; and to fight our enemy; and if you wish, along with that, we will send to you and your people the covenant; then we will fight you before we depart from this place." So the Damri said: Rather, we will restrain our hands from you; and we will cling to your covenant."
