Commentary
And when he mentioned their joy for what they attained; he mentioned their joy for what they knew for those who are upon their religion; he said: ﴿And they rejoice﴾ [Al-Imran: 170]; meaning: there is for them glad tidings of great stability; so much so that they seem to find it whenever they want; ﴿about those who did not catch up with them﴾ [Al-Imran: 170]; meaning: in the witnessing of this battle; then he clarified that by saying: ﴿from behind them﴾ [Al-Imran: 170]; meaning: in this world; then he clarified the glad tidings; he said: ﴿There is no fear upon them﴾ [Al-Imran: 170]; meaning: upon their brothers in their Hereafter; ﴿nor do they grieve﴾ [Al-Imran: 170]; meaning: at all; because nothing is lost from them; rather they are in increase every moment; and this is the greatest glad tidings for those who were left in a similar state to theirs; from the believers; because they will catch up with them in such a manner; because the cause is one; which is Allah's gift to them by being killed in it; or the absolute faith for the absolute happiness they are in without the condition of witnessing.
And when he mentioned their joy for themselves at one time; and for their brothers at another; he repeated it to magnify it; and to inform that it is truly without deserving; but it is merely a favor; he said: ﴿They rejoice in a favor from Allah﴾; meaning: the Majestic and Honorable; great (p-123) ﴿and a bounty﴾; meaning: from Him; great; ﴿and that Allah﴾; meaning: the Greatest King; who no one can truly measure; ﴿does not waste the reward of the believers﴾; meaning: from them; and from others; rather He will fulfill their reward for their deeds; and He will exceed them; and if He willed, He could have held them accountable in terms of justice; and if He had done that, they would have had nothing.
