Commentary

And when he removed the doubt of the attribution to the betrayal in its entirety; and established what he has of its opposites; from the high qualities; and the traits of generosity; he directed towards the doubt of their saying: "If he were a messenger, his companions would not have fled from him." (p-117) He said (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿Did you not﴾; meaning: Did you abandon what the noble messenger guided you to; the forbearing; the knowledgeable; the wise? And when ﴿a calamity befell you﴾; meaning: on this day ﴿a calamity﴾; for your opposing his command; and your turning away from his guidance; ﴿You have indeed suffered twice as much﴾; meaning: in "Badr"; while you were in the encounter with the enemy; and as if you were being driven to death; contrary to what you were in this battle; and that was only due to your compliance with his command; and your acceptance of his advice; ﴿You said: How﴾; from where? And how did this ﴿befall us﴾? Meaning: after our promise of victory; ﴿Say: It is from yourselves﴾; meaning: because the promise was conditioned upon patience; and piety; and you left the position; and rushed towards the spoils before the command regarding it; and from Ali - may Allah be pleased with him - that this was by their choice of ransom on the day of "Badr"; in which it was revealed: ﴿If it had not been for a decree from Allah that had preceded, you would have been touched in what you took by a great punishment﴾ [Al-Anfal: 68]; and He permitted them - glorified and exalted is He - the ransom after He admonished them; and He stipulated upon them if they chose it that a number of them be killed in the coming year according to the count of the captives; so they accepted; and said: We seek help with what we take from them against them; then we will be granted martyrdom.

Then He explained that by saying: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has no equal; ﴿is capable of all things﴾; meaning: of victory; and defeat; and establishing the means for each of them; ﴿Indeed, He is capable﴾ (p-118) And He had promised you that - glorified and exalted is He - in the past year; when He gave you a choice and you chose the ransom; and opposed those who opposed among you now; so the mention of the calamity which was caused by opposing what he arranged ﷺ; after concluding the verse before it with a reminder of what they were upon of misguidance; as you see from the eloquence.
