Commentary
And when the decree was: 'So if they do what He loves, He will give them their desire, of what they have determined for His sake'; He began to inform them of what draws their hearts to Him and limits their aspirations to Him. That is because whoever supports Him is the supported one, and whoever forsakes Him is the forsaken one. So He said (the Exalted): ﴿If Allah helps you﴾; meaning: the One who has all greatness; ﴿then no one can overcome you﴾; meaning: whether your Prophet ﷺ is among you or not; what is the matter with you that you weakened when Iblis shouted: 'Indeed, Muhammad has been killed'? Why did you not do as Sa'd ibn al-Rabi' - may Allah be pleased with him - did, and as Anas ibn al-Nadr - may Allah be pleased with him - did when he said: 'Die upon what your Prophet ﷺ died upon! For he is more excused for you before your Lord'? ﴿And if He forsakes you﴾; meaning: by the enemy being able to overcome you; ﴿then who is it that can help you after Him﴾; meaning: from a Prophet or anyone else? And when the decree was: 'So upon Allah, let the believers rely'; He connected to it His saying: ﴿And upon Allah﴾; meaning: the Greatest King, alone; not upon a Prophet, nor upon any strength thereafter, nor with wealth from spoils, nor anything else; ﴿So let the believers rely﴾; meaning: all of them; and this will be a sign of the correctness of their faith.
