Commentary
And when there was in it - along with that - a meaning of justification and a warning that He is free from testing; All-Knowing of the subtleties of secrets; He followed it with His saying - resuming to clarify what is among the fruits of knowledge -: ﴿Indeed, those who turned away from you﴾; meaning: from fighting; and confronting the champions; ﴿On the day the two groups met﴾; meaning: from the believers; and the disbelievers; ﴿Indeed, the devil caused them to slip﴾; meaning: he sought to make them stumble from that high position; ﴿The devil﴾; meaning: their enemy who is far from mercy; consumed by the curse; ﴿By some of what they earned﴾; meaning: from the sins that are not fitting for one who sought to draw near to the sanctities; and the places of intimacy; by abandoning the center; and turning towards the spoils; and other than that; for indeed, fighting in jihad is only by actions; (p-102) so whoever is more patient in acts of obedience; is stronger in fighting the disbelievers; and his turning away from them was not due to weakness in the essence of the matter.
And when that was understood that those who turned away became of the party of the devil; they deserved what they deserved; He attached to it His saying: ﴿And indeed, Allah forgave﴾; meaning: He who has the attributes of perfection; ﴿Them﴾; so that the hearts of the believers do not become distressed from them; and He concluded that with a statement of His reason for what is deserving of forgiveness; and forbearance; so He said - returning to the greatest name; indicating that the sin is great; and the danger because of it is severe; for if it were not for encompassing all attributes of perfection; they would have been hastened with the greatest punishment; ﴿Indeed, Allah is Forgiving﴾; meaning: erasing of sins; in essence; and effect. And when forgiveness may be with endurance; He negated it with His saying: ﴿Forbearing﴾; meaning: where He did not treat those who turned away with the treatment of those who left their homes - as previously mentioned - out of fear of death; so Allah said to them: ﴿Die﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 243].
