Commentary
And when he mentioned the reason for the diversion and the pardon for it; he depicted it; and said: ﴿When﴾; meaning: He diverted you; and pardoned you; when ﴿you were ascending﴾; meaning: you were removing the ascent; so you were descending towards the city; or you were going in the land to distance yourselves from the place of the incident; out of fear of being killed; ﴿and you were not turning﴾; meaning: you were not inclining; ﴿to anyone﴾; meaning: from a near one; or a distant one; ﴿and the Messenger﴾; meaning: the one who was sent to you to respond to him in all that he calls you to; and he is complete in his prophethood; ﴿calls you in your after﴾; meaning: he led you; and your other group; while you were retreating; and he was steadfast in his place; in the face of the enemy; with a small number; not reaching forty souls - according to the different narrations - relying on Allah's promise; and being watchful of Him; he says - whenever a defeated group passed by him -: "O servants of Allah; I am the Messenger of Allah; to me; to me; O servants of Allah"; as is appropriate for his noble position; of reliance on Allah; and trust in what He has; and he counted anyone below him from ally (p-96) and enemy as nothing; and I only said: that the meaning of this is defeat; because the purpose of the call is to turn towards the caller; after turning away from what he wants; to command and prohibit; so it was known by that that they were turning away from the intended; which is fighting; and in the interpretation from al-Bukhari; from al-Bara' - may Allah (the Exalted) be pleased with him - he said: "The Prophet ﷺ appointed on the archers on the day of 'Uhud' Abdullah ibn Jubair - may Allah (the Exalted) be pleased with him - and they came retreating; and that was when the Messenger was calling them in their after; and there remained with the Prophet ﷺ only twelve men."
And when the pardon caused their return from defeat to fighting; Allah (the Exalted) said: ﴿So He rewarded you﴾; meaning: your Lord made for you a reward; ﴿of grief﴾; meaning: by believing you killed the Messenger ﷺ; and it was a false belief that you were filled with terror; ﴿with grief﴾; meaning: that which you suffered from killing; and wounds; and defeat; and He called it - even though it was in the form of punishment - by the name of reward; because it was a cause for joy; when it became clear that it was a false report; and that the Prophet ﷺ was safe; until they were as if - as some of them said - no calamity had befallen them; so it is from the remedy with the disease; then He explained it by saying: ﴿So that you do not grieve over what has escaped you﴾; meaning: from victory; and booty ﴿nor over what has afflicted you﴾; meaning: from killing; and wounds; and defeat; for you were preoccupied with that (p-97) with joy over the life of the Messenger ﷺ.
And when He - glorified and exalted is He - told them what they did outwardly; and what they intended inwardly; and how He treated them; He said - adding to what you estimate: "So Allah - glorified and exalted is He - is All-Aware of what rectifies your deeds; and cures your ailments" -: ﴿And Allah﴾; meaning: the All-Encompassing in knowledge; and ability; ﴿is All-Aware of what you do﴾; meaning: of good; and evil; in this situation; and others; and of what rectifies from its recompense; and its remedy; sometimes He treats the ailment with the ailment; and sometimes with the remedy; for He is the capable doer; the chosen one.
