Commentary
And when He commanded - glorified and exalted is He - obedience to Him, which necessitates victory and reward; and He concluded with His love for the doers of good; He warned against the obedience of the disbelievers, which leads to disgrace; out of a desire to ally with them and support them. So He said (exalted is He) - continuing with the call in the verse of usury -: ﴿O you who have believed﴾; meaning: acknowledge faith; ﴿If you obey﴾; with submission and trust; or otherwise; ﴿those who disbelieved﴾; meaning: this group among them; or others ﴿they will turn you back on your heels﴾; by reversing your conditions; until you become like them; oppressors; disbelievers; (p-91) ﴿and you will become losers﴾; in all your affairs; in both abodes; so you will be far removed from the conditions of the doers of good; and you will be in a state of anger from Allah; small under the hands of enemies in this world; abiding in punishment in the Hereafter; and this refers to His saying (exalted is He) - first warning against the deceit of the disbelievers -: ﴿O you who have believed, if you obey a faction of those who were given the Scripture﴾ [Al-Imran: 100]; and clarifying that all of these verses are strongly connected to one another; and Allah is the Grantor of success.
