Commentary
And when He mentioned - glorified and exalted is He - these phrases in this manner in which He clarified the reasons; and made clear the state of error; and the estimation - after their conclusion - is: "So how many a people have We commanded to engage in jihad; and they were in these two categories; so We rewarded the obedient; and punished the disobedient; and that did not harm us at all; nor did anything of it occur contrary to Our will"; He addressed them - comforting them by the way of the righteous before them; and consoled them with their conditions - His saying: ﴿And how many﴾; and it means "how much"; and in it are many languages; it was recited in the ten with two forms: the majority with the opening of the hamzah; after the kaf; and the doubling of the broken ya; and Ibn Kathir; and Abu Ja'far with an elongated alif; after the kaf; and a broken hamzah; and perhaps it is more eloquent - because it compensates for the omitted letter - than the famous one with the elongation; and the elongation is more impactful in the soul; and more profound in the heart; and there is much discussion - in its languages; and its meaning; and its widely transmitted readings; and the rare ones; in connection and pause; and its writing in the mushaf of Imam Uthman ibn Affan - may Allah be pleased with him - (p-86) upon which the consensus of the companions occurred; to be the reference - in case of disagreement - to it; and is it simple; or complex? And is it derived; or static? And in the manner of dealing with its languages - I have comprehended it in my book "The Comprehensive Clarification"; for what has been said about "how many"; and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, said: ﴿from a prophet﴾; so that the consolation is greater; by mentioning what occurred in this battle from the killing of His companions; and the possibility of the expression to imply the killing of Himself; by His saying: ﴿fought﴾; meaning: that prophet; while being; ﴿with him﴾; but the more likely is to attribute "fought" to "the righteous"; for its agreement with the reading of the majority - except for the two sacred mosques; and Abu Amr -: ﴿fought with him the righteous﴾; meaning: their scholars; the heirs of the prophets; and upon their methodology; ﴿many, so what﴾; meaning: so what resulted from the killing of their prophet was their weakness; or the meaning could be - and the description of the multitude supports it -: the righteous fought; so what resulted from their killing was that the remaining ones after them ﴿weakened﴾; meaning: they became weak in their actions; ﴿for what befell them in the way of Allah﴾; meaning: the Most Great King; from the killing of their prophet who is their foundation; or for their brothers who are their supporters; because it is from Allah; ﴿and they did not weaken﴾ meaning: (p-87) at all; in action; nor in anything else; ﴿and they did not submit﴾; meaning: and they did not yield to their enemies; so they sought to be under their control - a hint at the one who said: "Go to Abu Amir the monk to secure for us safety from Abu Sufyan"; rather they were patient; so Allah loved them for their patience; ﴿and Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has the attributes of perfection; ﴿loves the patient﴾; meaning: so surely He will do with them acts of victory; and elevating their status; and all types of honor; the action of one who loves them.
