Commentary
And when he ﷺ was eager to seek vengeance against them; to take revenge on them; just as they took revenge on his uncle Hamzah; and several of his companions - may Allah be pleased with them - Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿You have no authority over them﴾; meaning: over them; nor over others; ﴿anything﴾; mediating it between the conjunctions; meaning: from vengeance against them; by killing; or defeat; by which you could achieve what you want; rather, the matter is entirely His; if He wills, He does with them what you want; and if He wills, He prevents you from it by granting them repentance; or by causing them to die in disbelief; by their own demise; and He will take charge of their punishment; and that is the meaning of His saying: ﴿Or He may grant them repentance﴾; meaning: all of them; by what uncovers from their hearts the veil of heedlessness; so they may turn away from what they are upon of injustice; ﴿Or He may punish them﴾; all of them; by your hands; by causing you to eradicate them; so that none of them escapes; or He may punish them without your mediation; by what He leads them into; which necessitates their persistence until they die in disbelief; along with the victory over you and others; which is for them in the form of blessings; necessitating an increase in their punishment; then He explained the four categories by saying: ﴿For indeed, they are wrongdoers﴾; and in the 'Maghazi'; from Sahih al-Bukhari; narrated by Hanthalah ibn Abi Sufyan, who said: 'I heard Salim ibn Abdullah say: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to invoke against Safwan ibn Umayyah; and Suhail ibn Amr; and Al-Harith ibn Hisham; then the verse was revealed: ﴿You have no authority over them﴾; until His saying: ﴿wrongdoers﴾.”'; and it was narrated connected in 'Maghazi'; and 'Tafsir'; and 'I'tisam'; from Salim; from his father; with different wording; and in it: “O Allah, curse so-and-so; and so-and-so.”
