Commentary
And when the decree was: "And the support by them does not necessitate victory"; and he had previously mentioned at the beginning of the surah his saying: ﴿And Allah supports with His victory whom He wills﴾ [Al-Imran: 13]; he said here (p-58) - limiting the matter to Him -: ﴿And what Allah has not made﴾; meaning: the mentioned support; and He mentioned it to you based on His encompassing attributes of perfection, which do not require any observer to anything at all; ﴿Except good tidings﴾; and when the defeat was upon them in this encounter; and the killed among them were more; he said: ﴿For you﴾; so that it would not be assumed that this is good tidings for their opponents; and for such a reason he preceded the hearts; so he said: ﴿And to reassure﴾; and it is known that the decree - for the verse to be of the interweaving -: "So that your souls may rejoice in it; and reassurance for you; so that your hearts may be reassured by it"; meaning: the support; so he ruled here that it is good tidings; restricted by "for you"; thus the attention was with a pronoun more intense; until it was as if it was said: "Except good tidings for you; and your reassurance"; so it was necessary to delay the pronoun from them; and the meaning is that they were initially fearful; so when the good tidings came, they were reassured by it; hoping that what was done to them would be like what was done in "Badr"; so when they were reassured by it, victory occurred; just as the promise occurred; then when their hearts were reassured to something that strengthened their power; because they had previously received victory; and joy; by striking; and stabbing; in "Badr"; (p-59) and others; they glimpsed towards something of that; defeat occurred; so that they would arrive at the truth of certainty; that they have no strength; nor power; and for that reason Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿And what is victory﴾; meaning: in that and other than it; ﴿Except from Allah﴾; meaning: the One who possesses the attributes of perfection; not by support; nor anything else; so do not find in yourselves any return of those who turned back; nor delay of those who delayed; nor defeat of those who were defeated.
And when he presented the matter of "Badr"; here; and at the beginning of the surah; and by that what he has of honor and wisdom was realized; he said: ﴿The Mighty﴾; the One who cannot be overcome; so He does not need to fight anyone; nor does He need in His victory - if He fights - the assistance of anyone; ﴿The Wise﴾; the One who places things in their most precise locations; without any confirmation; meaning: the One who supported you before this battle; and at the beginning of the day in it; there is no supporter for you; nor for anyone else besides Him; so whenever anyone turns to someone else and entrusts him to him; he will be forsaken; so beware of him; so that you may obey him with the obedience of those who do good; at all times; and this is contrary to what is in the story of "Badr"; in "Al-Anfal"; and there will come, if Allah wills, what relates to it from the speech; of what the situation there necessitated; and "The Wise"; is the head of the verse; by the consensus of the people of knowledge; as in "Al-Anfal".
