Commentary

Then he turned away - glorified and exalted is He - this is the answer to them; to fulfill the sufficiency; so he said: ﴿Indeed﴾; meaning: that is enough for you; then he resumed his saying: ﴿If you are patient and fear Allah﴾; meaning: you establish patience and piety for your Lord; so you do what pleases Him; and you refrain from what angers Him; ﴿And He will send you﴾; meaning: the disbelievers; ﴿From their speed﴾; meaning: their time; borrowed for the swiftness in which there is no hesitation; from: 'the pot boiled over'; when it boiled; ﴿This﴾; meaning: in this round; ﴿He will send you﴾; meaning: a clear support - by what he indicated with a verbal indication: [thousands]; and a meaningful indication: the marking; ﴿Your Lord﴾; meaning: the one who does good to you with more than that; ﴿With five thousand angels﴾; then he clarified that they are from the elite of the angels; by his saying: ﴿Marked﴾; meaning: distinguished by what is known of their rank in battle; and the apparent meaning of the expression of marking is to convey the fighting; and from the limitation to the descent is its absence; and the benefit of their descent is the blessing with them; and the terror of the disbelievers by whom they see from them.

Al-Baghawi said: "Ibn Abbas and Mujahid said: The angels did not fight in the battle except on the day of Badr; and in other than that, they witness the fighting; and do not fight; they are merely a number and support."
