Commentary

And when this story included the calamity that Allah will recount much of it; and it is fully detailed in the histories; it was more appropriate to begin by reminding those who were involved of what Allah promised them through the tongue of His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, before the occurrence of the battle; of victory conditioned upon patience and piety; as a reminder to them that the failure came from their side. Then, to admonish them by prohibiting what prevented them from victory; and commanding what would achieve it for them; as He will encourage them towards that by recounting to them the news of those who fought alongside the prophets before them; that when they were struck by death, they did not falter; and they knew that the failure was from themselves; so they hastened to rectify it by the actions of the pious; of patience; supplication; and acknowledgment of sin. He said - replacing from: 'When you went out'; returning to the beginning; to emphasize the matter; urging them to reflect on its sources and points; and to contemplate its beginnings and endings -: 'When you said to the believers'; meaning: those whom you consulted regarding the matter of 'Uhud' - and among them were the hypocrites - when they were shaken by the return of most of the hypocrites; until some of the steadfast were about to turn back; weak and cowardly; with what the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, had informed them of that vision which he interpreted as a slaughter that would occur among his companions; so that their advance would be with insight; or that would deter them from going out to the enemy; as the inclination of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was with most of his companions; and their leaders; towards remaining in the city. He said, denying; coming with the tool of emphasis; for negation: 'Will it not suffice you'; meaning: O believers; 'that He should support you'; with a hidden support - as indicated by the merging -; 'your Lord'; meaning: the One who is responsible for your upbringing; and the victory of your religion; 'with three thousand'; then He magnified their matter by saying: 'of the angels'; then He increased in magnifying them by stating that they are from the heavens; by saying: 'sent down'.
