Commentary
And when what this statement informed about their hatred and the intensity of their enmity was needed to reach the observation, it indicated that by saying: "If it touches you"; meaning: merely a touch; "a good thing will harm them"; and when this was a clear evidence, but it was not explicit, he followed it with the explicit by saying: "And if a misfortune befalls you"; meaning: with the strength of its bitterness, and the severity of its impact, and its harm; "a bad thing they will rejoice in"; and when this was a matter that is reproachful, infuriating, and painful, he treated them by referring to victory, conditioned by the condition of piety and patience; so he said: "And if you are patient and fear Allah"; meaning: you are among the people of patience and piety; "their plot will not harm you at all"; then he explained that by saying: "Indeed, Allah"; meaning: the Possessor of Glory and Honor; "is All-Encompassing of what they do"; meaning: He prepares for every plot what nullifies it; and the meaning - according to the reading of the address - is: "By your every action; so whoever is patient and fears Allah, I will grant him victory; and whoever acts otherwise, I will take retribution from him."
