Commentary
And when that was completed in these apparent aspects that necessitated certainty for every fair-minded person that they are defeated, it reached his affair, blessings and peace be upon him, the beloved and esteemed, that he should declare to them the meaning of that. So he said: "Say to those who disbelieved"; meaning from the people of your time, following the methodology of those whom We took. "You will be defeated" just as they were defeated, even if you fill the earth, for you are only opposing your Creator, who is the overpowering of all things: "And certainly the overpowering will be defeated by the overpowering." The 'lam' in the reading of the majority is for addressing, and in the reading of the unseen, it is for reasoning, meaning say for their sake, or it is in the meaning of 'about', meaning say about them. And the news of mere defeat was understood without mentioning the punishment, just as it was mentioned in the warning of those before them that their taking was by the hand of overpowering, defense, and support, honoring their Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, because the punishment was presented to him, but he refused except for defense according to the tradition of perseverance. So the first of that was his, blessings and peace be upon him, victory over the honored Mecca, and its opening was a victory for all the earth because it is the mother of the cities, as al-Harali pointed out.
"And you will be gathered"; meaning you will be collected after your death alive, just as you were before death. "To Hell"; al-Harali said: and it is from the harshness, which is the dislike of the appearance. So it will be your bedding, and there is no bedding for you other than it. "And how evil is the bedding."
