Commentary
Then he mentioned what the night prayer has yielded for them. He said: ﴿They believe﴾; and he repeated the greatest name, indicating their presence of His greatness. He said: ﴿By Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has majesty and the utmost perfection, which has bewildered minds. He followed it with the day in which all of His greatness will be manifested, because He is the one who carries all good. He said: ﴿and the Last Day﴾; meaning: a belief that knows it is true by their affirmation of it through righteous deeds, by what comes to them from knowledge that has no end. Thus, their night prayer is renewed, and their steadfastness is established.
And when he described them with steadfastness in themselves, he described them as those who correct others. He said: ﴿and they enjoin what is right﴾; meaning: renewing that and continuing upon it; ﴿and they forbid what is wrong﴾; for that reason. And when he mentioned their action for good, he mentioned their enthusiasm in all its forms. He said: ﴿and they race towards good deeds﴾; and when the implication was: "So those are from the steadfast," he added: ﴿And those﴾; meaning: of high rank; ﴿are among the righteous﴾; indicating that whoever does not remain steadfast is not suitable for anything. And the context guided to the implication: "And most of them do not possess these attributes."
