Commentary
And when the context might imply that they are all like that, he said - beginning anew; denying that -: "They are not equal"; meaning: in these actions. He praises - glorified and exalted is He - those among them who turn to the truth; and cast off falsehood; and do not regard predecessors; nor distant or near successors. Then he began his saying - clarifying their inequality -: "From the People of the Book"; so he made it clear so that the return of the pronoun would not be assumed to specifically refer to those who judged them to be disbelievers. "A community"; meaning: a group that has the right to be led; "standing"; meaning: upright in what their Prophet brought them, steadfast in what he legislated; prepared to transition from it upon the arrival of the abrogating text which he foretold; and described it; not deviating in faith in some of it; and disbelieving in some of it. Then he mentioned the motivator for uprightness; and said: "They recite" meaning: they continue consistently; "the verses of Allah"; meaning: the signs of the Lord of Glory and Honor; the clear revelations in which there is no ambiguity; "during the hours of the night"; meaning: its hours; "and they prostrate"; meaning: they pray in utmost humility.
