And when He informed about them - glorified and exalted is He - with this humiliation; He followed the news by stating that in every time and every place, His treatment of them is contrary to what they wanted. So He compensated them for their eagerness for leadership by imposing upon them humiliation. And for their attachment to wealth, He made them dwell in poverty. And He informed that this is for them the collar of the dove; it will not depart from them until the end of time; it remains in their descendants by their actions which the descendants have not renounced. So He said - glorified and exalted is He - continuing: 'The humiliation has been struck upon them'; and it is the submission by force; and it surrounded them as the house surrounds its inhabitants. 'Wherever they are found' [Al-Ahzab: 61]; meaning, they are found by someone who is skillful, light, and perceptive, in every place and in every situation; 'except' when they are holding fast; 'to a rope'; meaning: a strong covenant that leads to safety; and it is the covenant of jizyah; and what is similar to it; 'from Allah'; meaning: the One who possesses all greatness; 'and a rope from the people'; meaning: collectively: those who believed and others; in agreement with that rope which is from Allah - glorified and exalted is He.
And when humiliation may sometimes come with contentment; even if from one aspect; He said: 'And they returned'; meaning: they turned back from the good state they were in; 'with the wrath of Allah'; the greatest King; accompanying them. And when the two descriptions may accompany wealth; He said: 'And it was struck'; meaning: along with that 'upon them'; meaning: as a house is struck; 'poverty'; meaning: destitution; so that they become with these descriptions the most entrenched in humiliation. It is as if it was said: 'Why did they deserve that?' So it was said: 'That'; meaning: the imposition upon them of what was mentioned; 'because they'; meaning: their ancestors who were pleased with their actions; 'were disbelievers'; meaning: they renewed disbelief with persistence; 'in the signs of Allah'; meaning: the greatest King who possesses all perfection; and that is the greatest disbelief; for they witnessed it; while it encompassed from greatness what befits the greatest name; 'and they kill the prophets'; meaning: those who come from Allah - glorified and exalted is He - truly; due to their multitude; as indicated by the collective form; for it is more eloquent than what is in its beginning; the most eloquent of what is in 'Al-Baqarah'; so that their blame is in the manner of progression; as is the principle of wisdom.
And when they were protected in religion and in worldly matters, he said: "Without right"; meaning: it permits killing them. Then he explained their boldness in this disbelief by saying: "That"; meaning: disbelief; and the two great killings; "because they disobeyed and were"; meaning: by nature; and disposition; "they transgress"; meaning: they renew the obligation of themselves to transgress. For indeed, the boldness on sins and the disregard for exceeding the limits trivializes disbelief. The Asfahani said: The masters of transactions said: Whoever is tested with abandoning etiquette falls into abandoning the Sunnahs; and whoever is tested with abandoning the Sunnahs falls into abandoning the obligatory acts; and whoever is tested with abandoning the obligatory acts falls into belittling the Shari'ah; and whoever is tested with that falls into disbelief. And the verse is evidence for the accountability of the son for the sin of the father, even if he is elevated. And that is in accordance with what I have seen in the translation of the Torah that is currently in their hands. It was said in the second book: And Allah - glorified and exalted is He - said all of these verses; all of them: (I am the Lord; your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt from servitude and slavery; you shall have no other gods; you shall not make for yourself anything of the idols and images that are in the heavens above; and on the earth below; and of what is in the water beneath the earth; you shall not bow down to them; nor worship them; for I am the Lord; your God; a jealous God; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children; to the third and fourth generation; and showing mercy to thousands of those who love Me; and keep My commandments).
