Commentary
And when the opposition of the majority is decisive, He alleviated for His allies by His saying: "They will not harm you"; and when harm - as has been previously mentioned from al-Harali - is the infliction of pain on the body; and what follows it from the senses; and harm is the infliction of pain on the soul; and what follows it from the states; He used the term harm here in a part of its meaning; which is the general infliction of pain; then He excluded from it; so He said: "except harm"; meaning: with their tongues; and He expressed this to illustrate the concepts of harm and injury; so that it may be present in the mind; and the exception would be more indicative of the negation of their reaching confrontation; "And if they fight you"; meaning: on a day of days; "they will turn their backs"; explicitly stating the pronoun of the addressees in the required text; "the backs"; meaning: in defeat; humiliation; and cowardice.
And when the ally may have a turn after a retreat; He said - justly regarding the ruling of recompense; so that the restriction by the condition is not understood; indicating by the particle of delay to the great rank of their abandonment -: "Then they will not be aided"; meaning: there will never be a supporter for them from others; even if the duration is long; so do not concern yourselves with them; nor with anyone who supports them from the hypocrites; and Allah has spoken the truth; and who is more truthful than Allah in speech?! They did not fight in any place except that they were like this.
