Commentary
And when he presented what is for the people of the Book who are inclined towards disbelief; regarding the knowledge of the Day of Resurrection; in His saying: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths" [Al-Imran: 77]; and he concluded that verse by stating that for them is a painful punishment; and he continued until he concluded this verse by stating that with that is great; he explained that day by saying - beginning with what is more painful for them than the enjoyment of their opposites -: "On the Day when faces will be white"; meaning: by what they have of good deeds; "and faces will be black"; by what is upon them of bad deeds; "So as for those whose faces have turned black" (p-22) he began with them because the disordered announcement is clearer; and because the situation is for intimidation; and to increase the harm for its people; so it is said to them - as a reprimand; and a scolding -: "Have you disbelieved"; O black-faced ones; and servants of desires! "After your faith"; by what you were created upon of sound natures; and you were enabled by it from the straight minds; to contemplate the signs; then by what your prophets took from you of covenants; "So taste the punishment"; meaning: the painful great one; "for what you used to disbelieve"; while you know; for indeed you are in the curse of Allah, remaining.
