Commentary
And when the determination of man is weak, and his intellect is limited, He guided them - after they were stopped by piety - to the foundation of all good deeds; the one that guarantees protection from all slips. So He said: ﴿And hold fast﴾; meaning: compel yourselves to a strong connection and great discipline; ﴿to the rope of Allah﴾; meaning: the path of the King who has no equal; which He has laid out for you and prepared. The essence of the rope is: the means by which one reaches the goal and need. And everyone who walks on a narrow path fears that his foot may slip from it. If he holds on to a rope that is tightly stretched between both sides of that path, he is safe from fear. And the precision of the path is not hidden by what has been reported in the authentic transmission. And this religion is its example; for its difficulty and severity upon the souls, due to what they have of inclinations and desires, is an example of its precision. So whoever overcomes his soul and preserves it by holding on to it, is protected from falling from what is its example.
And when each of the conscience, the rope, and the collective name understood the encompassing nature of the matter, He confirmed it by His saying: ﴿All together﴾; do not let any one of you stray from it; rather, whenever you stumble upon someone who has departed from it, even by a span, bring him back to it; and do not debate with him; and do not neglect his matter; and do not be heedless of him; lest the system becomes disrupted, and you tire continuously. Rather, you should remain like the one who is tied tightly, like a bundle of arrows with a rope; not allowing one of them to separate from the others. Then He confirmed that by saying: ﴿And do not be divided﴾; then He reminded them of the blessing of gathering, for that is a motivator for gratitude; and it is a motivator for the continuation of holding fast and piety. And He began with the worldly matters, for it is the foundation of the Hereafter. So He said: ﴿And remember the favor of Allah﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 7]; the One who has all perfection ﴿upon you﴾; O you who have held fast to the bond of religion; ﴿when you were enemies﴾; fiercely opposing one another; ﴿then He united your hearts﴾; gathering on this straight path and great methodology; ﴿so you became, by His favor, brothers﴾; He removed what was in your hearts of enmity and eliminated those trials and tribulations.
And when He mentioned the blessing that saved them from the destruction of this world, He followed it with the blessing of the religion that protected them from eternal destruction. So He said: ﴿And you were on the edge﴾; meaning: the brink; and the edge of ﴿a pit of fire﴾; by what you were in of ignorance; ﴿so He saved you from it﴾.
And when this clarification was completed in this strange style; he alerted to that by saying - in response to one who says: "Blessed is this clarification! How strange it is as a clarification!" - ﴿Thus﴾; meaning: like this clarification that is far-reaching; an unparalleled example; ﴿Allah clarifies﴾; whose knowledge encompasses; whose power is comprehensive by His greatness; ﴿to you are His signs﴾; and He magnified the matter by specifying them with it; and by adding the verses to it; and since the context is for clarifying the details of the disbelievers in their intention to mislead them; he concluded the verse by saying: ﴿So that you may be guided﴾; meaning: so that your state may be like the one who is looked at, whose guidance is hoped for and expected; this hope is your state among yourselves; as for Him - glorified and exalted is He - His knowledge encompasses the happy and the miserable; then the matter is with Him; so whoever He wills, He guides; and whoever He wills, He misleads.
