Commentary
And when this warning from the People of the Book came to an end; and the amazement; and the encouragement; He commanded what would yield His pleasure; so He said: ﴿O you who have believed﴾; meaning: they claimed that with their tongues; ﴿Fear Allah﴾; meaning: affirm your claims with the piety of the Lord of Glory and Honor; ﴿as is His right to be feared﴾; so continue to submit to Him; by constantly being aware of Him; and do not cut off any matter without Him; ﴿And do not die﴾; in any state; ﴿except as Muslims﴾; meaning: fully submitted; and it has been reported from the knowledgeable Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili that this verse is fundamental to the religion; which is the Oneness of Allah; and His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿So fear Allah as much as you are able﴾ [At-Taghabun: 16]; in its branches.
