Commentary
And when His indication of wrath upon His enemies was completed; and He conveyed to them the greatness of His vengeance; if they persisted in their misguidance; He approached with glad tidings to His beloved ones; facing them with the sweetness of His address; and the purest of His songs; warning them against being deceived by the misguiders; and alerting; and guiding; and reminding; and showing them what He concluded with what preceded it; of His encompassing knowledge of the subtle plotting of the Jews; He said - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿O you who have believed﴾; meaning: by our Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him; ﴿If you obey a faction﴾; He used this wording when the warning was against division; and separation; which is brought about by the blame of the people of the Book; ﴿of those who were given the Scripture﴾; meaning: those who sever ties between loved ones; like Sha's ibn Qays; who plotted against you until he caused war between you; for were it not for the Prophet whom your Lord had mercy upon you through; you would have returned to the worst of what you were in; ﴿they would turn you back﴾; and He increased the ugliness of this situation by saying - indicating the dropping of the preposition to imply the entirety of the time of distance -: ﴿after your faith, disbelievers﴾; meaning: drowning in the attribute of disbelief; so how wretched a bargain it is! And how unjust a way it is!
