Commentary
And when he indicated by reliance that He is sufficient in the matter of provision in the homeland and in exile, with neither wealth nor family, he said, adding to what he intends by saying: So how many of those who rely on Him has He sufficed, and He has not made them in need of anyone besides Him. Let him hasten who has saved him from disbelief and guided him to migration, seeking His pleasure: ﴿And how many a creature﴾ meaning: many of the creatures, both rational and otherwise ﴿do not carry﴾ meaning: cannot bear to carry ﴿their provision﴾ nor do they store anything for another time, because they may not attain the benefit of that, and they may attain it and rely, or they may not find it.
And when it was appropriate to say: So who provides for them? He answered it: ﴿Allah﴾ meaning: the One who encompasses in knowledge and ability, characterized by all perfection ﴿provides for them﴾ while they do not store, ﴿and you﴾ while you do store. There is no difference between His provision for them in their weakness and His provision for you in your strength and storing. For the two groups sometimes find and sometimes do not find. Thus, storing and not storing are not regarded as significant or looked at.
And when the most important thing for animals is provision, they are constantly managing it by what comes to their minds and they express it if they are able to speak, and they murmur about it if they are silent. As for the rational being, it is with general matters, while the others are with specific, individual things. The rational being might say: I cannot cut off the ties from that. Allah, the Exalted, said: ﴿And He is the Hearing﴾ meaning: of what can be heard regarding Him and other matters ﴿the Knowing﴾ meaning: of what He knows of that, and of what your affairs and the affairs of your enemy will become. He has not commanded you with what He has commanded you except that He has prepared for it its causes, and He is capable of causing what a person relies upon from the productive means at his disposal, and certainly what will hinder it, and of causing for the one who relies and cuts off ties what will suffice him. And whoever studies the books of Sufism and the biographies of the righteous predecessors - may Allah benefit us by them - will find much of that which enlightens and comforts him, glorified and exalted is He, and gives him patience.
